November 2009 Archives

Alright, LU. In the spirit of Christmas, there are more opportunities to serve this season than during any other (or so we speculate). So for a few ideas on how to get involved, check these out!

» The Dismas House is having a dinner and is looking for volunteers to help out. This house is for ex-offenders during their transition. If you're interested, find more information here.

» The Hope Lodge is holding a fun game of bingo for cancer patients. Bingo can provide a break for the residents that are dealing with serious situations, so if you're interested in helping out find more information here.

» Hillsboro High is hosting Tools for Schools and needs volunteers to help build computer shelves and other types of shelves for schools to use. If you're crafty or handy, this is your job! Find more information here.

» Second Harvest Food Bank is hosting another weekly Family Sort Night, so if you're willing to help sort food and hang out for awhile, find more information here.

While we were all eating delicious turkey on Thanksgiving, this turkey was having a wild rumpus in Nashville. Suprisingly, wild turkeys aren't that uncommon to Nashville, and this is just one shot of many.
Good morning, LU! So we're preparing to get back into the swing of things, and what better way to start than with the Roundup?

» The Sommet Center may be undergoing another name change because the Predators are suing Sommet Group for not fulfilling payment obligations, and the relationship between Sommet Group and the Predators is on the rocks.

» BNA has obviously made adjustments in the past year, as you may have noticed by the flashing signs and constant rerouting around the airport. However, these changes are going to make holiday travel supposedly much easier, and we're hoping this will continue year round!

» So we told you that Sarah Palin was coming to Nashville. Well, word on the street is that when she speaks (at Opryland Hotel) she is banning media from being in the room. Interesting..

» One inmate was mistaken for another one and was RELEASED under the assumption that he was someone else. Wowww...

» Wolf Calls and Pig Tales begins showing this week. Show times are 4pm on Dec. 1 before Lighting of the Green, 10am on Dec. 2 and 10am and 7pm on Dec. 3. The show is only $5 and we hear it's supposed to be great!

» Lighting of the Green is tomorrow! Come out and enjoy the massive tree, Amy Grant, and festivities.

2009ChampTrophy.jpgThe lady bisons won the ASUN tournament, the ASUN conference, finished the season unbeaten, and are headed to the NCAA tournament.  Nice job ladies!  Read more here.

Although this weekend begins our Thanksgiving break, we thought we'd go ahead and give our Nashvillians (and those not going home quite yet) some ideas in case you get bored. Here you are!

As a lot of you go home for the next week, to cities and towns all over the country, we hope you'll remember that while it's good to go home, it's also good to come back. Because even when school gets overwhelming and we get a little homesick, we can always be glad that we're in Nashville. And there isn't much better than being here. Happy Thanksgiving, LU!
Good morning, LU! We're ready for Thanksgiving and for a lot of you, your break has already started (lucky)! For the rest of you, relax for your last few classes and in the meantime, enjoy the Roundup.

» For those of you who are most looking forward to your annual dose of pumpkin pie, you may be out of luck. There is a pumpkin shortage and in turn a pumpkin pie shortage. Hurry! Get your filling fast!

» If you're from Franklin (or just Williamson County) and you've been wanting an alternate route to Nashville, check out the new bus system. Starting December 1st, they will have shuttles from Williamson County to Nashville!

» If you liked seeing Sarah Palin on Oprah, or you just like her in general, lucky for you she'll be visiting soon.

» Our golf coach is getting creative, using eBay to raise money for the golf teams here at Lipscomb. By auctioning off signed flags, he's hoping to make a lot over the holidays.

» Our men of Bisons Basketball lost last night to Tennessee Tech, but it's alright guys we've got plenty more games!

Fiesta!

TN Tech.JPGDon't get us wrong, we're excited about tonight's game against Tennessee Tech.  Still, we're a little confused about the theme.  Fiesta?  We understood the farmer thing when we played Freed, but a side by side comparison of the TN Tech Eagle and a mariachi band reveals some puzzling differences.  Fiesta does mean free food at the arena tonight, so we'll be happy to just run with it.

Jhin_UN.jpgLipscomb alum Dr. Paul Kyo Jhin ('60) is leading the United Nation's 500/12 Initiative, an effort to provide 500,000 computers for 10,000 schools for 33 million students in 60 nations by 2012.  Lots of numbers there. Dr. Jhin has come a long way from his days as a Bison cheerleader and it's definitely worth your time to read more about his story.

Nashville Plaza Model?

This picture of the downtown judicial plaza looks like a play model. A play model that we'd like to play in. Well, don't be tricked: this shot is completely real. The photographer used a camera trick of the trade called "tilt shift." Google it. You'll see some pretty cool results.

Morning Roundup

It's a little less cold than yesterday, but we're all hoping for a snowy week during Thanksgiving. Speaking of, here at WULU, we're all thankful that Jake Burton was willing to dance like a fool in honor of our Bisons. In case you missed the video yesterday, here's a link. And here's the roundup:

» As we said yesterday, the Gibson Guitar plant in Nashville was raided yesterday by federal agents on suspicion of using imported and illegal wood for their guitars. CEO Harry Juszkiewicz has since stepped down from serving on the board of the Rainforest Alliance, an environmental group. He will rejoin once the investigation is complete if Gibson wasn't breaking the law.

» Using existing local area real estate to their advantage, the Davidson County DNA Crime Lab was approved yesterday by Mayor Karl Dean. The Charlotte Pike ex-car dealership will be a new police precinct and a new forensics lab.

» Metro Council believes that tourist tax revenue will be sufficient to finance the debt on the new music city center. We will be financing debt. We'll say it again: we will be financing debt

» It's official: Google will be releasing a phone in first quarter of 2010.

» Coming in as a bitter ruling, a federal judge ruled yesterday that The Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the flood damage during Hurricane Katrina.

» A Minnesota man revealed yesterday that his son, who was born three years ago, can only speak Klingon (from Star Trek). How? Simple. The dad only spoke Klingon to him. Our question is: what woman married this guy???

» And finally, make sure to head to Allen Arena tonight at 7pm to watch our Men's Bisons take on Tennessee Tech.

Well, we may not have beat Vandy earlier this week, but it sure wasn't because our fans weren't trying hard.

Thanksgiving doesn't only happen at our homes and around our dinner tables. The Nashville Rescue Mission serves Thanksgiving dinner/lunch to hundreds of homeless and impoverished people every year. If you're interested in helping with this amazing task, you can find out more here.
Good morning, LU! TWO DAYS UNTIL THANKSGIVING BREAK! Enough said. And for the Roundup...

» A gas station was robbed early this morning, but Metro won't have any trouble finding the suspect. He forgot to put his mask on until just before the robbery... so they have about ten minutes of footage of his face. Ha!

» The Gibson Guitars Headquarters was raided by feds because they were suspected of using illegal wood (that's right) in their guitars. Sounds like the feds don't have much better things to do right now...

» Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - the 9-11 mastermind - will be tried in a civilian court. It is official. What's interesting is that he doesn't actually have rights to a civilian trial, but the opportunity for harsher punishment is greater if he is tried this way.

» The Batman Building was named one of the 12 most interesting office buildings in the world. No, we're not kidding. Named by a French business journal, they referred to it as "La Bat Tower." We're hoping that catches on.

» Surprise! The guns in parks debate has not gone away. It is back on the Metro Council Agenda and up for a revote and revisit.

» Our volleyball team made Atlantic Sun history!! We are so proud!

construction.jpgThe contruction cranes are back.  It looks like something big is about to happen at the corner of Belmont and Glen Echo.

Todd Garrett is a Senior at Lipscomb University and pursuing his future into Lipscomb's new Pharmacy School. Morning Roundup

Happy Tuesday to all! It's cold again, and here at WULU, we're excited for the break to come. Here's the roundup:

» Way to go Bud, way to go.

» Daron Hall, that was a close one. The Sheriff was slated to appear on a panel in Washington D.C. for a think tank that has hate-group ties.

» The new VW plant in Chattanooga has received over 35,000 applications since it's announcement earlier this year. It may be over a year until the plant is ready to hire.

» Check out this sweet interview from the NCA Conference in Chicago with our beloved scooter-rider teacher Jim Thomas.

» Men's Bisons took a loss yesterday against Vanderbilt but are gearing up for a win versus Tennessee Tech on Thursday.

» The U.N. is apparently striking secret deals with Tehran to get other countries to lift sanctions on Iran, allowing Tehran to keep their nuclear program. The U.N. denies all claims made thus far.

» We are all in the Thanksgiving spirit, but don't forgot that on December 1, is Lighting of The Green. You can find out more information here.

» And finally, the highly revered Oxford dictionary has chosen, ... "unfriend" as their word of the year. Social media is taking over the world. Lol.

JoshSlater5.jpgThe Bisons play Vandy tonight, at Vandy.  Campus Life has free tickets that you can pick up at the Vanderbilt box office.  The game is at 7 and you had better be there.

Alright, LU. It's the week before Thanksgiving, so you know that everywhere around town is amping up for the holidays and may be in need of some serious servants. Where can you serve? Let's see!

» 102.9 the Buzz is having a food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank and is looking for volunteers anywhere from now til Thursday! If you can help out, find out more info here.

» J.B. Knowles needs volunteers to play Bingo with the elderly. If this is your thing, find out more info here.

» The Nashville Rescue Mission is looking for volunteers to help serve a meal this Thursday night. If you'd like to help, find out more info here.

» This Saturday be a part of ReLeafing day - where new trees are planted all over Nashville! If you'd like to be a part of this, find out more info here.

If you didn't go (we hope you did), Anteaters' Ball was a huge success. The men of Alpha Phi Chi and the ladies of Pi Kappa Sigma sang and danced their hearts out, and all for the betterment of Honduras. Thank you, Anteaters and Flamingos! We can't wait 'til next year!
Good morning, LU! The countdown begins! Five days until Thanksgiving break and we are looking forward to it. Here's the Roundup!

» A Bluff City woman mistook a police officer for a Sonic car-hop and is facing DUI and drug possession charges as a result. Whoopsies!

» Sarah Palin is making an appearance on Oprah today. Apparently this is a VERY big deal.

» Lighting of the Green is coming up on December 1st with Amy Grant and our famous 35 foot Christmas Tree. We're excited and ready for it, and so is the Tennessean.

» With more and more people and organizations (such as, ahem, LIPSCOMB) becoming more environmentally friendly, it's no surprise that Nashville is making plans to create more buildings using geothermal energy to heat and cool. Oh yeah... we did that awhile ago here on campus.

» Don't forget, if you are politically inclined, or even just curious, tonight Pizza and Politics will be taking place in Shamblin at 6:30pm!

» We lost to Elon in men's basketball this weekend, and our women's basketball lost to LeHigh but won against Central Arkansas; our Volleyball team won their 22nd straight match, and our Cross Country teams came in 16th and 19th in their meets.
In honor of the last weekend before Thanksgiving break, take advantage of some of these amazing Nashvillian opportunities!

We don't know how or where Anna took this cool photo, but we like it.  Makes us think of all the electric neon madness downtown on Broadway.
Good morning, LU! TGIF and TGIATB! (That's short for thank goodness it's almost Thanksgiving break!) Oh, yeah, and it's Friday the 13th! Here's the Roundup!

» If you'd like some more ammo for making fun of the grand state of Tennessee, then check out this guy who was found sleeping in a ditch with a rifle across his chest. Complete with some hand-rolled marijuana joints and a half-empty bottle of moonshine in the bib of his overalls, he just might be the Tennessean of the year.

» TVA is decreasing electric bills again! So for all of you who live off campus and pay your own rent, you can breathe a little easier now.

» Metro Public Schools are getting fancy on us. When kids buy lunch, they now type in a PIN to access their funds. Do we think bullying will end? Nahhh.

» The weather is supposed to beautiful today and through the next week - good thing, since none of us are going to want to be here!

» If you're looking forward to the Christmas Village this year, beware. The event is still looking for a good place to be this year, since for some reason the fairgrounds are off limits. The mayor's office suggested Municipal Auditorium, but the Christmas Village people just aren't feeling it.

» Get ready for Anteater's Ball tonight and tomorrow night! It's been called the "best Anteater's Ball ever" and we're hoping it will live up to our expectations! (We're sure it will.)

» LUMA is hosting a silent auction tomorrow during the girl's volleyball game in Allen Arena.

» Women's Basketball and Volleyball have games tonight... Volleyball and Men's Basketball have games tomorrow... and Men and Women's Cross Country and Women's Basketball have meets/games on Sunday. Come out and support!

John Allen Muhammad

sniper.jpg
Yesterday, at 9:11pm CST, John Allen Muhammad was executed by lethal injection. Muhammad was one half of the Beltway Sniper Duo that murdered ten people and injured three. Juvenile Lee Boyd Malvo cooperated with police in to help in their investigation. He is currently serving multiple life sentences without the possibility without parole.

This scenario brings up many questions with the reoccurring trend of Muslim's involved in branches of the US Armed Forces involved in acts of violence on innocent people. Wulu wants to know your thoughts on this: are there connections between Muslims in the Armed Forces and should we be concerned about them? Comment below.

Morning Roundup

It's a crisp, cool morning with blue skies above. Either the CMA's were a success last night, Miley got her Twitter back, or it's just a beautiful morning outside. We're going with the latter. Here's the roundup:

» Three UT Football players were arrested last night in an effort to rob a convenience store. Coaches and spokespeople are staying quiet but robbery sounds like robbery. Not good.

» This will be the only time we talk about this: Taylor Swift did pretty good last night at the CMA Awards held here in Nashville.

» If you weren't aware, Nashville is one of a few cities nationwide that will be implementing recharging stations for electric vehicles. However, some say that selected cities may have a difficult time making the transition to accepting these new types of automobiles. Nissan's Smyrna plant will begin manufacturing the all-electric LEAF in 2012.

» No need to worry, RCKTWN will be bought, ... only to move two streets over to the old Grooms Engine Building on 4th avenue in the heart of SoBro. RCKTWN spokesperson ReGina Newkirk said that "it's crucial for us to reach the youth we serve" in regards to staying downtown.

» In related news, Mayor Karl Dean is saying that he's not going to force something that would be a mistake on the city taxpayers in regards to the $600-million proposed Music City Center. Dean has some under some scrutiny for being such a heavy proponent for the new convention center. Sounds like he's remembering his appointment for re-election is coming up soon.

» WPLN's Blake Farmer has a great audio feature on a Korean War veteran who appreciated the low-key memorial. Listen to the audio feature here.

» Ever thought that a social-networking website could be an alibi? Well, Rodney Bradford used one to get him out of jail. Arrested for a Brooklyn robbery, Rodney told investigators to look at his Oct. 17th Facebook status update in Harlem so prove he couldn't have been in Brooklyn. Investigators agreed and let him go. Facebook win.

» Having a bad day? Check out this countdown of ABC TGIF's best sitcom moments. What a smile-maker.

» And finally, pizza and politics tonight with some notables.
vetsday.jpg

This was the Veterans Day Parade last year. We're not sure who is going to be in it this year, but if you're able to go it will most likely be a blast. If you know any veterans, take a moment to send them an email or a card and thank them for what they've done for us. Happy Veterans Day 2009!
Good morning, LU! Only a week and a half until Thanksgiving break AND it's a Wednesday.. good news all around! Here's the Roundup.

» Mike Huckabee is signing A Simple Christmas tonight at Davis Kidd. If book signings are your thing, this might be one you're interested in.

» Be careful if you're going to be around town today, due to Veterans day there are several road closures all over town. Boooo.

» Nashville's first Chipotle opens this Friday at 3pm, with lots to offer. The first 100 customers get free stuff and TODAY they are handing out free burritos from 11am-7pm. Sounds like a reason to skip class, if you ask us!

» If you like to keep up with the economy and the government, the first quarter state revenues were announced. Long story short: it's less money than usual. Surprise.

» A woman in Goodlettsville won $1,000,000 by playing McDonald's Monopoly! Maybe we should make the drive more often...?

If you've never taken a riverboat ride on the General Jackson, then you may want to take a ride down the Cumberland River on Nashville's finest boating machine. Depending on which night you go, you can catch a live band, a theater/dinner show or a simple ride down the river. Make sure to bring a camera for a different look at the Nashville downtown skyline as well.

» Thinking about tagging your girlfriends name underneath a bridge in Franklin? Think again. A new graffiti law will make parents responsible for their children who deface others property. You may want to rethink your stencil of Hanna Montana after all...

» There's really nothing to say other than: Metro never enforced this law before?

» A Whites Creek High School student was arrested on Monday for bringing a loaded gun onto school property. Feeling threatened by other classmates, the student took the gun from his parents bedroom. He was charged in Juvenile court

» H1N1 shots are available in Davidson county today and at Lipscomb too. They will be available here from 11:30am to 4:30pm in the lower level of the Burton Health Sciences Building. The nasal spray vaccine is $15.

» Hurricane Ida is headed to the Gulf Coast region but is weakening in its approach. Still, it's considered to be a category 1 Hurricane.

» The Fort Hood tragedy this week has caused the FBI and President's cabinet to take a hard look at Muslims fighting in the military. Evidence shows that Hasan had been corresponding with a radical cleric in the middle east. More on the story here.

» And finally, the Cash for Clunkers program results are in. Click here to see which states purchased or traded-in domestic cars over foreign automobiles. Hint, states near Michigan did.
Alright, LU. Here they are! Now divide and conquer!

As seen in the Roundup, this little guy was the culprit to the power outages that occurred over the weekend. Unfortunately he found the main power box, and well, the rest is history. Rest in peace, little guy. We will miss seeing you frolick across campus.
Good morning, LU! We're back to the grind, and we've got a Roundup for you!

» Thanks to a curious bird, Franklin had a massive power outage. ...The bird was fried, kind of like the squirrel that was fried here on campus over the weekend. We also had power outages.

» Beware! Parking meters may be changing downtown, meaning more money for the government and less money for us.

» Our basketball team won the Freed game last week... Our lady Bisons basketball beat Harding on Saturday... Go Bisons!

Tonight at the Date Auction all proceeds go to the Bryant Hardison Memorial Scholarship. Bryant was a student here last year who died in a tragic accident. This video honors his memory and may give you a better idea of who he was and why his friends and family loved him so much. The scholarship will help a rising senior return to Lipscomb for their senior year who couldn't have otherwise. Come out and support, it's a great cause!

Las Paletas (down Granny White) are a Nashville treat, but we're not sure how long they're going to last before it gets too cold! Their hours are already getting shorter, so make sure you stop by soon and pick up the icey treat before it's too late!
Good morning, LU! It's a nippy Wednesday outside and we're just loving it. We suggest you cuddle up with some Starbucks and a good book... if you have time. Either way, here's the Roundup!

» A billboard in Green Hills is causing an uproar, apparently. Although this article only quotes people who don't mind the billboard...

» A local dentist in town has decided to pay kids $1 for a pound of candy. We wonder how this makes the people buying the candy feel.

» Phi Sigma is having their annual Date Auction tonight at 8:30pm in Shamblin. All proceeds go to the Bryant Hardison Scholarship Fund to help someone come to Lipscomb.

» Guys and Dolls begins playing this week! Make sure you get your tickets early - we're sure it's going to be a hit!

» One school in Oregon is teaching students to grow marijuana. Yeah. We're not kidding!

» A calf lost his hooves to frost bite but not to worry! He's up and walking fine on prosthetic legs!

Pulitizer prize winning poet Natasha Trethewey will be talking about her poetry and reading some poems aloud tonight at 7:30 in Ezell Chapel.  Here is one of her poems to whet your appetite:

After Your Death

First, I emptied the closets of your clothes,

threw out the bowl of fruit, bruised

from your touch, left empty the jars

you bought for preserves.  The next morning,

birds rustled the fruit trees, and later

when I twisted a ripe fig loose from its stem,

I found it half eaten, the other side

already rotting, or--like another I plucked

and split open--being taken from the inside:

a swarm of insects hollowing it.  I'm too late,

again, another space emptied by loss.

Tomorrow, the bowl I have yet to fill.

If you stopped by your local Starbucks this morning, you may have noticed, that three days into November, they have started using their holiday cups. They have also begun to serve Eggnog Latte's, Peppermint Mocha's and Gingerbread Latte's. You might as well get ready to start hearing Christmas music everywhere now also. You can check here to see where your local Starbucks is.

Today in history: The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2 which carried the first animal intro orbit; a dog named Laika in 1957. Here's the roundup:

» A Gallatin man has been charged with his ninth DUI offense in Franklin this week. The rest is history: an officer pulled him over, the man got out while yelling at the officer, threw his beer can out of the car and got back in to evade arrest. He is currently being held on many, many different charges.

» Many Wilson county employees were left moneyless this past weekend due to a clerical error. They were expecting their paycheck, but alas, Trick! Their treat was scheduled to post to their bank accounts yesterday.

» A late-night favorite restaurant, Sunset Grille, is getting a new chef. Chris Cunningham is the new chef de cuisine at Sunset.

» Fort Campbell Musuem is taking molds of soldiers faces for an exhibit. WPLN's Blake Farmer reports with a great audio feature. Listen here.

» The Health Care Reform debate is still on-going, and recent news may put things on hold even longer. Nancy Pelosi has stated that the bill would cost around $894 million over a decade. However, new reports state the the bill would hold a price tag of over $1.2 trillion. Where's the breakdown? House democrats continue to add programs and are getting stuck on how to deal with abortion and immigration. More here.

» Esquire Magazine has done it again. No they didn't offend republicans again (that we know of). Esquire has come up with yet another way to challenge the publics notion of print vs. technology. You may remember last year Esquire was the first printed magazine to incorporate a digital screen in their cover. Read here to see what their gearing up to do.

» And finally, there are many, many, many events happening on campus this week. Here's a run-down:

Okay, we have the best looking mascot around, who are we kidding? This guy is not only bearing the freezing cold with a body of steel, but he's also MASSIVE and quite scary. So. Let's appreciate the bison and love the fact that it represents who we are. Go Bisons! (And, well, he's kind of cute...)
