Don't forget that this is coming up, and it's never a disappointment. Check out the Facebook group for more details, or just listen up for announcements on your Lipscomb email. Trust us, it'll be good! Check it out: November 13th and 14th!
Good morning, LU! TGIF and happy (almost) Halloween! Here's the Roundup:

» Vince Young is now officially the Quarterback for the rest of the Titan's season. No pressure. But really...

» The Science and Technology Career Fair is in McQuiddy tonight from 4:30 to 6pm. Great opportunity for networking and prospecting future jobs. Basically, if you want to make your mom proud, you'll go.

» Lipscomb is once again bringing back the BIG SCARY for Halloween. Check it out on Saturday night at 9pm, it's always been known to be awesome!

» Daylight savings starts on Sunday. None of us want to be "that guy" walking into church an hour late, so please, set your clocks accordingly.

» An architecture firm just won the bid to redesign north Nashville, an historic district. The plans are pretty great and the city is starting to get excited.

» It's no surprise that we're one of the lowest ranked states in the US for education, so maybe it's also no surprise that we rank among the lowest for math proficiency, also. Let's face it: we're breeding kids who just aren't that smart... sorry! (Except for here at Lipscomb, of course.)

Morning Roundup

Halloween is only a few days away, and the dentists are getting ready to make some money. What a wonderful holiday. Here's the roundup:

» RCKTWN has recently been criticized for bringing in bands that have an anti-christian message. Parents aren't happy. Teenagers are calling it "free expression." Sigh.

» You might want to check your bank account. Two ATM skimmers have been stealing money out of unsuspecting people's accounts by tracking their ATM account numbers. Over $22,000 has been reported stolen, and authorities are expecting that number to grow.

» You may or may not have known that NASA launched the Ares 1-X Rocket yesterday successfully. Ares is the new initiative of manned space flight that is much more cost-effective and safe.

» Nashville Scene has their Best of 2009 list up. Click here for the Best of Reader's Poll. Lipscomb ranked number 3 for the best MBA program.

» Google announced yesterday that very soon they will release GPS turn-by-turn direction's for free on cellular telephones. This might very well put companies like Garmin and Tom-Tom out of business. Let's all welcome the new Wal-Mart of the technology business to the table.

» The United States Army is developing new radar technology in soldiers' helmets to help them see who might be coming from all sides.

» And finally, Hoopapalooza is only a few days away. Check here to see all that you can expect to get ready for the basketball season.

James Lacroix, owner of Lacroix Design Company, is a highly respected Nashville area designer, mostly focusing on apparel, identity, and print. Some of his claims to fame include Relient K, Switchfoot, and Anberlin apparel, among other clients. Check out his website here.

Oh yeah... and he teaches adjunct at Lipscomb! We are lucky, yes we are.

ken.JPG70 year-old Ken Griffith, a Bison baseball player in 1959, suited up and practiced with the team one more time earlier this week.  Besides reliving some great memories, Ken gave the team a few pointers on leveling their swings and growing awesome mustaches.  Watch Ken's story here.

burt.jpg

So this was Burton last year during our homecoming week, themed "Paint the Town Purple" ... but it kind of looks like a haunted house to us. Which makes us wonder... why don't we turn a building on campus into a haunted house...??
Good morning, LU! Halloween is quickly approaching.. what are YOU going to be this year? We haven't quite decided yet... but here's the Roundup!

» A Murfreesboro gang was taken off the streets yesterday, with 64 counts of murder against them... among other things.

» If you're looking for cheap flights, check out Southwest's Sale that's going on.. but only for a few more hours! Book fast!

» The Lady Bisons Soccer team closed out the season last night, with a 2-1 loss and four wins overall.

» KISS is playing at the Sommet Center tonight... No, we're not kidding!

» An Austin Peay student hit the jackpot on The Price is Right, totaling her winnings at a net worth of $45,000.

» LU's International Justice Mission (IJM) Chaper will be hosting an event called "The Ignite Project." This event is open to anyone who wants to aid the pursuit of social justice around the world. Starting at 8pm they will be chatting with students from over 50 universities through an online live-feed, writing advocate letters to congressmen, and watching a documentary called "Crossing Midnight."
Seas, Shores

Augustine's so desperate in his asking about how God can be contained by the human heart or all He's made, how He has to be contained by it be cause He fills it, how He can't possibly be contain ed by it because it's so clear He stretches out bey ond our edges, all our edges. Even when my ed ges are losing their lines and blooming into hues He is beyond my edges. Like I said one time I have wanted His proximity more than anything in my life. Maybe a sculpting of borders would happen then and my angry seas would meet their shores.

If you've never taken a Fall afternoon drive down the Natchez Trace, then you may want to. This shot encompasses a small portion of what this drive has to offer. Do yourself a favor, get some coffee, with your loved one in the passenger seat, windows down, heat turned all the way up, ... and drive.

Morning Roundup

It's Tuesday, and the weather outside is frightful. That's only because Halloween is only a few days away. So don't worry. Here's the roundup:

» There were rumors a while back about a "Religious-like-Opryland" opening somewhere in Tennessee. Well, the Tennessee Court of Appeals has kept Bible Park USA from moving forward in Rutherford county, ... for now at least.

» Metro Council men and women are finding themselves somewhat upset at Music City Center supporters. Those sitting on the Music City Coalition have hired out lobbyist's to take Metro Council members to lunch as "concerned citizens," but rather push the true agenda. Shame, shame.

» Some think that loyal and Obama-supporting democrats will eventually abandon The President on his stance on healthcare. Read more here. In related news, it seems as if the President will be sending more troops to Afghanistan in response to continued resurgences of terrorist attacks.

» Through a difficult and reviving economy, flights are up for the first time in 18 months at BNA.

» If you weren't aware that H1N1 was a problem, now it is officially a national emergency

» One of our current Seniors, David Sulpy, has been nominated for an award by the Nashville Technology Council. He is one of three area students nominated for this prestigious award.

» And finally, if you are planning on flying soon, make sure your pilots are looking out for your best interest, rather than their schedules
art_and_copy.jpgIf you're interested at all by marketing, advertising, design, art, or business, we HIGHLY recommend you see this film while it's still in theaters (last showing is Tuesday!). The documentary plunges into the world of creative advertising and discusses the ins and outs of the industry, what America thinks of the industry, and how powerful it really can become. Through a variety of interviews with several leading creatives, the inner-workings of the ad industry is revealed in a quite artistic manner. No matter what your opinion on advertising is, you won't leave disappointed and you definitely won't look at an ad the same way.

Alright, LU. We've got a few great service opportunities coming up that we want YOU to be a part of! Check it out...

» Saturday Serve: A Franklin community day hosted by Rolling Hills Community Church that will consist of spending the entire day doing yard work, painting, etc, and helping the neighbors around Rolling Hills know how good God is. More information.

» The Arthritis Foundation is holding a Jingle Bell Run and they need more volunteers! They are looking for help with pretty much everything from stuffing goody bags to photography to event decoration. More information.

» The Angel Tree Project held by the Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help man the trees in local malls. More information.

Just incase you missed it, the Black Out was a complete success! As we all know, we won, but beyond that we won the award for greatest fans.. and we're pretty proud of it, too.

Good morning, LU! It's Friday! Enjoy the next couple days off, but before you do - enjoy the Roundup!

» Don't expect the rain to let up, but get excited for the Fall colors!

» Tennessee will be receiving federal aid along with Georgia to help with all the flooding that occurred earlier this month.

» Vanderbilt showed up on the list of hundred most expensive universities in America. Followed immediately by Duke, Ivy Leagues sat much further down on the list. We wonder what that says about value...

» If you see extra people on campus today, be nice to them! It's an LU Friday courtesty of Admissions, and visitors are usually prospective students!

» Big news!! We won the Boulevard!! In terms of soccer, that is. Congrats, boys!

Thanks to Josh Harper for the tip

In preparation for tonight's men's soccer game against Belmont, we thought it might be helpful to give you some insight into the mind of our opponent.  This video documents how the Bruins get pumped for big games.  A pep rally?  A concert?  Something crazy and fun like the Running of the Bison?  Not quite.  It's...umm...something much more creative.

SAM&ZOES.jpg
If you're looking for a coffee shop that most people don't even think to work at where you can study, read, surf the web or visit, then you may want to take a step next door from Baja Burrito.

Sam & Zoe's is a small, quaint restaurant in the Bransford/100 Oaks district that offers a nice array of dining choices. You have the option to eat in their dining room or take a cup of coffee out on their covered front porch.

Their menu contains what any coffee/sandwich/soup shop would have. They offer many choices of bagels and breakfast food as well as soups and sandwiches that give Panera a run for their money.

How could we forget that this place is a coffee shop? You won't be let down trying all of their different blends and home-brewed java.

If you're looking for a place that's away fro your usual routine choices, then give Sam & Zoe's a try: you won't leave hungry, thirsty or disappointed.

There are going to be 840 doughnuts in chapel today. 840 doughnuts. 840 doughnuts. Don't miss it.

Morning Roundup

It's Thursday, and we are all ready for a much-needed break this weekend! Here's the roundup:

» Earlier this week, notables such as Martina McBride, Jeff Fisher and Tony Dungy were here on campus helping RCKTWN raise money. However, while Jeff Fisher spoke, he wore a #18 jersey, ... of Peyton Manning. Titans fans are upset that Fisher said "I just wanted to feel like a winner." See why fans are upset.

» United States Senator Lamar Alexander made the comparison this week that President Obama and his cabinet are coming very close to looking like Richard Nixon's duration in the White House. Alexander said, "This behavior is typical of street brawls and political campaign consultants. It is a mistake of the President of The United States and The While House Staff."

» What's this? The NashvilleScene calling out Metro Nashville? Yes they are, and for good reason. Metro has used a local E-newsletter to push their agenda for getting the proposed Music City Center passed. Bad form Nashville, bad form.

» The biggest locally owned and operated bank in Nashville, Pinnacle, is an indian-giver, sort of. They were granted $95 million by the government during the bailout frenzy-trend. They are not ready to pay back the U.S. Treasury yet because they need the money to prepare for further economic decline. In related news, Pinnacle officially became the bank of the Titans this week ... fail.

» If you Tweet or Google, Microsoft may be knocking at your virtual door. Microsoft and Google have reportedly bought access to live data streams from Twitter. Also, you may see Twitter tweets showing up live in Google and Bing search engines.

» Insurgents vs. Heroin. Heroin takes more lives since we started the war back in 2001.

» And finally, STOP! Go look in your refrigerator and take out your Hazelnut Spread Cream Cheese. It has a very dangerous substance in it that it not declared on the label: peanuts. Unreal.

Thanks to Lucas Womack, we have an especially exciting video to feature today! We'll let it speak for itself... enjoy! PS. If this catches your fancy make sure you attend Anteater's Ball on November 13th or 14th! Hosted by the men of Alpha Phi Chi!

(Unfortunately)

So tomorrow (as seen in the Roundup) is our Red Bull Battle of the Boulevard for Men's Soccer. EVERYONE needs to be there to show our support, and don't forget to wear black for the black out! After all, it's never fun to be the only person in a yellow shirt when everyone else is wearing black, and no one wants to sit next to you because of it.. Just sayin'...

Good morning, LU! We're halfway through the week and it's been a good one. Here's the Roundup!

» Metro has no problem taking out local businesses to make way for the Music City Center. They are claiming Imminent Domain on several small businesses downtown in order to get the space for the convention center, and the businesses aren't very happy about it.

» A pit bull attacked a police officer in Lawrenceburg - leaving him with surgery!

» Rocketown being one of the buildings that is being flattened for the convention center, a fundraiser was held yesterday to raise support for when Rocketown does have to move. We held it here in our own Allen Arena, and many of our students participated and volunteered. Word has it it was a huge success!

» Developments in the McNair case suggest that he may have had a second girlfriend, and analysts are pouring over McNair and Kazemi's last few text messages.

» Tomorrow night don't forget to come out and support our men's soccer team as they face Belmont for the Red Bull Battle of the Boulevard. It's a black out, so wear your black LU gear!

» At Chik-fil-a today (not on campus, unfortunately) you can get a FREE chicken biscuit, no purchase necessary! And believe us when we say - it's worth the drive! But hurry - it's only going on during breakfast entree hours!

» Thanks to a $1.5 million dollar grant, Metropolitan Nashville Schools will start the process of making schools more energy efficient very soon.

» The MDHA filed suit last week to start making offers on buildings that fall within the limits of the proposed Music City Center in the SoBro district. Click here to see the full list of buildings and Metro's offers for them.

» Centennial and Vanderbilt both recently purchased the da Vinci Si Surgical System. These devices are the latest in robotic assisted surgery. These devices are being used for cardiac, urological, and gynecological surgeries. HD surgery

» Scientist Astronomers have recently found thirty-two new planets according to the European Southern Observatory. On Monday, Astronomers announced that they discovered these planets, which are very close in size to Earth, which begs the questions; are there other inhabitable planets in our solar system?

» Lipscomb was referenced in The New York Times yesterday by former Secretary of Education, Lamar Alexander. Alexander mentioned Lipscomb in reference to universities that are staying ahead of the curve by adopting plans to graduate in three years rather than four. Read the full story here.

» Last week, the world was frozen in suspense as a weather balloon was traveling at dangerous speeds and heights as a boy was supposedly trapped in the balloon. This week the truth comes out that the boys parents staged the whole event. They are now awaiting charges from authorities.

» And finally, our own Lipscomb Bison Men's Soccer Team won their first A-Sun victory over Jacksonville (1-0).
Alright, LU. We all know Lipscomb loves to serve - so here are some ways you can serve in our community!

Okay, okay, so maybe this is a little premature. But we love that it's FINALLY Fall! And we're hoping that maybe this winter we'll get lucky with a couple more inches more snow than the usual one we get... and maybe some extra days off, too? We'll see!
Good morning, LU! It's chilly this morning, but don't get too used to it - it'll be in the 60's by this afternoon! Here's the Roundup:

» Tennessee has the highest sales tax in the country. No wonder all of us college students are broke.

» Most Tennesseans don't want the H1N1 vaccine... hope it doesn't come to Lipscomb!

» Oh wait.. but the Swine Flu has really only killed 28 people in Tennessee, as opposed to the usual 700 by the seasonal flu.

» NashvilleScene just released their Best Of for 2009! However, it's not on their website yet.. so we'll keep you posted.

» The man behind the Balloon Boy Hoax will most likely have charges pressed against him soon. Apparently the hoax was to promote a reality show, and it was planned months in advance.

» One of our Titan's cheerleaders is a lawyer by day! That's unexpected.
KingSeth.jpg

The sense of community, that has for many years distinguished the church, is disappearing. In an increasingly individualistic culture, the church, especially the Western church, has forgotten that the body of Christ has been called to be exactly that: a body, a community that functions as a unit. The church amounts to more than a collection of individuals. The church must live as the body of Christ, empowered by the Spirit, in this world.  The bible bleeds the idea of community. From the beginning, there was community. Adam and Eve were community. The covenant of Abraham called God's people to bless others. Israel was a community. Christ came and lived in community with his apostles. Without doubt, the first century church was a community.[1] For the contemporary church to be the body of Christ, this essence of community must be recaptured. There can be no more "collection of individuals." Relationships in Christ are meant to be more than that.

Morning Roundup

TGIT! With our 4-day school week coming to an end, most of the students here on campus are ready to enjoy a much-needed fall break! Here's the roundup:

» A recent MTSU poll shows that some Tennesseans are somewhat suspicious of our current president and that some won't get the H1N1 vaccine.

» United States Department of Education released the national results for mathematics yesterday. Tennessee was ranked 44th in 4th grade math and 42nd in 8th grade math, ... out of 50.

» Tennessee State University is expecting a generous gift by the May family, but are still waiting where the land will be.

» Don't bring a knife to a gun fight, because things are about to get messy. The healthcare battle is getting ready to reveal is true colors on Capitol Hill. Make sure you get some popcorn.

» If you have been keeping your nose (and money) out of the economy quagmire, then it may be time to take a look. The market hit over 10,000 points, marking the first time in a year.

» Our lady Bisons Volleyball team beat belmont for their third time in a row this week. How many lives does a bruin have?

» And finally, if you want to start your weekend off right, make sure to get your ticket for tonight's Tokens Show at Alumni Auditorium.

These are a few of our favorite things: when it rains, there is still a lot of beauty to be found on campus and around us in general! Enjoy the rain, and be thankful that it's a warm rainy day and not a cold one.

Good morning, LU! It looks like the rain is back - but we hope not for long. Until it goes away, here's the Roundup:

» Some local Nashvillians are trying to get a restraining order against Obama.

» Steve McNair's co-owner of his restaurant, Gridiron9, wants to shut it down permanently. Which is ashame because it was only open for ten days before his death.

» The Frist is free AGAIN this week! Twice!! Today and Sunday enjoy free admission and check out the new Georgia O'Keefe exhibit!

» Curbside recycling is going to expand in Tennessee - we are VERY excited about this!

» If you're a Johnny Cash fan you're not going to believe this. The couple who bought Cash's cabin from the man he sold it to decided to donate all of Johnny Cash's original furniture to Goodwill. Yes. We're not kidding. But we also don't guarantee that any of it is left at the Hendersonville Goodwill, either.

» Don't forget to hit up High Rise tonight for $1 food items at Wednesday Nights We Eat.

Our Chick-Fil-A has been opened for a day, 4-day school week and colder weather is coming soon. It seems as if Fall is officially here. Here's the roundup:

Don't mess with this guy! In fact, you're probably best off not messing with any of the squirrels on campus. They've been known to haul ice cream cones away from unsuspecting students, sunbathe on the pavement, and provide overall entertainment for Lipscomb students. It's true, we love them.

-Chic-fil-a opens today in the student center.

-Career Cafe today at 3 in Shamblin.  Today's focus is "Work with a Purpose" with representatives from the TN Housing Development Agency and folks involved with supporting Nashville's homeless population.

-Yet another rough game for the Titans.

-A TN House seat is up for grabs in a special election.

-The Musicians Hall of Fame will induct a few new members tonight.

Okay so we're tired of the rain, too. But don't let that get you down! We've still got plenty of plans for this weekend!

You may have heard that Chic-Fil-A is opening on campus next Monday.  In case you forgot, a giant cow has taken up residence on the second floor to the student center to remind you.

Fridayyyyyyyyyyy!  Not to mention it's gorgeous outside.  Here's the roundup:

-Our men's basketball team has been picked to win the ASUN this year.

H4H_Logo_Square.jpgLast Friday, a group of Lipscomb students and Dr. Charla Long launched a campaign called Hearts4Hunger.  Their goal?  To provide 2,000,000 meals for families in Middle Tennessee by next Valentine's Day.  Wow.  We continue to be blown away by incredible things like this that are happening here on our campus.  Take a few minutes to check out the Hearts4Hunger blog and Twitter stream to learn about how you can help them help our local communities.

Do you ever fall victim to complacency?

Then I would like to introduce you to my friend, Gandalf.

I'm currently watching Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. As I'm enjoying this epic piece in film history, I can't help but notice the stagnant rut that King Theoden has fallen in. The man just sits around entranced all day while his kingdom runs itself right into the ground. I suppose you can let him off the hook since he's under an evil spell and all, but the man banishes Karl Urban and his legion of bamf horsemen right out of the kingdom of Rohan! Who does that?! I mean really.

Anyway, it isn't until ole Gandalf the White meanders his way into Rohan and mystically bashes him right in his dumb skull that Theoden springs free from this evil spell. This magical head-shot transforms the king from

to

in a matter of moments. This new rejuvenated king goes on to rally his men to win the battle of Helm's Deep, which springboards them to their ferocious cavalry charge in Return of the King. If you haven't seen this uber cavalry scene, rent Return of the King and watch it. You'll thank yourself.

» Our favorite thick-rimmed comedian Drew Carey is making a bid. He wants the Twitter account @drew. He apparently is offering $1 Million to charity.... if he gets 1 Million followers. Indian giver?

» If you are thinking about taking a trip for fall break, then don't fret: The Nashville International Airport has ranked high in national airports who are on time.

» Lubbock Christian University is adding Soccer in 2010 and have named Lipscomb Alumni soccer player Babak Abouzar as the Women's Head Coach.

These are beautiful, but we're pretty excited for the empty trees and crisp air. It's a beautiful day and it's still pretty warm, so we think maybe we'll head to Centennial and throw a frisbee before it really gets too cold...

Good morning, LU! You can relax now - it's hump day and the week is almost over! Here's the Roundup.

» The H1N1 Vaccine has been administered to health care providers in Memphis and apparently it comes in the form of a nasal spray called FluMist... We're not sure we want to spray flu mist into our noses, but okay.

» The Uptown YMCA on Church Street will be closing. Sorry, guys. But you'll be relocated! (This is NOT the Downtown YMCA on Church Street...)

» Senator Fred Thompson is returning to his old flame: acting. He is soon to star in Secretariat, a Disney film.

Morning Roundup

It's another overcast day, with the chance of another fall rain looming overhead. However, most students today don't mind as the temperature isn't above 90°F. You're waiting for it, so here it is: the roundup:

» Recently, Lipscomb University held the Nashville Business Breakfast, bringing area business leaders together in one place to share and connect with one another. The keynote, Nissan's Carlos Tavares (VP of Americas operations), said that Tennessee is a "critical player" in the production of electric vehicle production. He then began to sing this song.

» In related news, Nissan engineers in Franklin, TN and Japan are developing an artificial exhaust sound for the new electric LEAF. Why? The car is so quiet that Nissan executives feel that people need to have the sounds for the "overall pleasure" you'll get driving the car.

» SoBro's hit teen music venue RCKTWN is headed all the way to Florida. Well not exactly. The success of Nashville's 6th Avenue venue has turned heads from community leaders in Pompano Beach, FL. They are gearing up to open a RCKTWN FLORIDA location in October.

» Yesterday marked the day when Swine Flu/H1N1 vaccines hit clinics and hospitals yesterday. But Americans are still cautious of taking them. Slatest explains here

» The future is here. Well, it was, but now it's not. Whatever. A video was released this week of the Air Force using a LASER to inflict damage to a target. The Air Force says this is a great breakthrough in technology as this will decrease collateral damage. Here's the footage from the Air Force

» And finally, don't forget that tonight at 6 PM in the student center. Find out what Spring Break mission trips are taking place and how you can be a part of one!
Well, LU, we've got some opportunities coming up to serve in our community and we'd love for you to participate.

» United Way is looking for volunteers for all aspects of their organization. With families, with coworkers, or alone, they need help! More information.

» The Nashville Rescue Mission is always open to volunteers also, but particularly during the Thanksgiving season they need a few extra hands. They will be providing meals to those who can't afford a Thanksgiving meal on October 26th and 27th. More information.

» The Blood Donation Center is looking for people willing to give blood, as blood donors decrease around November. More information.

» Habitat for Humanity Nashville is always looking for extra hands. Jobs range from building houses to organizing stock at the Home Store. More information.

It was a huge hit, and we can't wait for Tau Phi Cowboy Show 2010!

» Tomorrow is German-American Day on campus! We are the only school to celebrate this in Nashville since it was established by Reagan in 1983.

cheekwood morning.JPGHere's a picture taken at the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens in some soft morning light.  Cheekwood is a favorite spot for Nashville's photography buffs, and the gardens will be opening early this Saturday to give amateur photographers the chance to catch some rare shots.  If you can pull yourself out of bed tomorrow, you can start shooting the gardens at 6 A.M.

Good morning, LU! Well it looks like the rain is back, but hopefully not for long! Until we find out, here's the Roundup.

» Nashville heard us! Donut Den is keeping it's old sign and we're really excited about it! The survey was in favor of the old sign 5,216 to 116 votes! Holy smokes!

» No, we weren't being babies about the rain, it really did rain a lot this month. In fact, it rained enough to set a record..

» If you've had a hankering for the Cheekwood scenery recently, you're in luck! It's FREE FREE FREE this weekend!

» If you're anti-vaccines like many are, not to worry. Tennessee is not mandating the H1N1 vaccine like many states are, so you can breathe easy!

» If you drive a Saturn, it may be about to turn into a collector's item. GM has announced that they are eliminating their Saturn brand, which was actually started in Spring Hill.
