You may have noticed mobs in the Square last Thursday.. or maybe just the sounds of an old car being ripped to shreds with sledge hammers.. or maybe loud music and megaphones? Whatever the case, you probably didn't miss Rush Fair. Rush Fair marks the beginning of the Rush process every semester, and prospectives could come mingle with all of the social clubs and get an idea of what each club is about.
Good morning, LU! We're onto the second week of school and we hope you're as rested as we are (or aren't..)! But really, what is a Monday morning without the Roundup?

» If you love to ride your bike everywhere, don't think you can escape traffic laws. It's rumored that police are starting to use radar guns on cyclists! So if you can pedal up to 45mph, you better slooowww down.

» If you don't think fonts are important, think again. IKEA is getting a lot of criticism from their customers due to their recent typeface change from Futura to Verdana.

Jonathan Moore is a recent Lipscomb graduate who majored in Bible. He is working at the Belle Aire Church in Murfreesboro, TN.

Why is it so hard to be honest? Why is it so hard to be honest with ourselves, others, and ultimately God? It seems so simple, right? To simply be honest - no strings attached - just honest. But no matter how easy it sounds - honesty is one of the most difficult things in the world to achieve. Why is that?

I think it is because we are masters at pretending and deceiving. I mean - the prince of this world is the great deceiver - so as fallen creatures - in a fallen world - we are raised being taught by the great deceiver how to act a certain way in order to receive a certain reaction. So we become actors and actresses in this grand stage of life - except - unlike hollywood actors - our roles don't stop. We perpetuate them and confuse them.

But here is the deal - in being dishonest, we loose touch with who we are. We deceive not only others but ourselves as well. We forget where we came from - we forget where we are going. We loose touch with reality. We live in this glass world we have fabricated with our own hands - we fear a pebble of being thrown into such a world. So what do we do? We continue to put on an act and hold the people in our lives at bay.....

Is this what God wants for us?

Basketball Service

Children at Harvest Hands were overcome with amazement when they saw how tall Lipscomb Basketball player Josh Slater is.  He had to sit down just so the kids wouldnt run away.  Many groups around campus were a part of service projects during Quest Week, one being the Men's Basketball Team. Here Josh (a Guard on the team) is giving a bible lesson the children of Harvest Hands. You can read the full story here.

-You've spent long hours playing the game, now watch the movie: Mario Kart!  Seriously.

-Have you been wishing you could keep your favorite chicken or goat in the strip of grass between your apartment and the sidewalk?  Well, Metro Council might decide today that you can.

-Tennessee's gubernatorial candidates are already making promises.  Start keeping track now, because we've got a long way to go before 2011.

-Christianity Today considers how the early church may have weighed in on the health care debate.

-Rush Fair today at 5pm in Bison Square, and Gamma Xi Band Party is there at 8pm.

It's probably happened to you.  You just happen to be driving down Hillsboro after dark, not feeling particularly hungry, and then you see it.  A neon siren, defiantly tacky in the face of Green Hills Mall, bidding you to come enjoy a sprinkle covered chocolate donut.  Well you may have noticed that Donut Den's famously eye-catching sign has been replaced with a much less interesting version.  Before you start getting nostalgic, there's still time to act!  Visit Nashvillest.com to learn how you can cast a vote to decide the sign's future.

Cassowary and Bevington stood on the hill overlooking the vast estate; Cassowary with his left foot perched atop a rain-smoothed stone, his left elbow resting atop the knee and gazing out to the rolling green before him. Bevington stood awkwardly at his side, compulsively fidgeting with his scarlet hunting jacket and unnecessarily clearing his throat. Both men wore the traditional jackets with breeches and tan tops; Cassowary had added a lightly scratched monocle to his ensemble.  "Bloody good day for a hunt, what say you m'boy?" Cassowary remarked.  "Affirmative", replied Bevington.  "Audley suited up and ready to go?"  "One second sir."

Today marks the first day of chapel for the 2009/2010 school year. And apparently Lipscomb has a subway system? Either that or there is new artwork on stage that has yet to be explained. WuLU thinks it has something to do with the theme for the year. We'll keep you updated.

Morning Roundup

School is officially back in session and campus is buzzing with excitement. Or maybe rather dread that classes have officially started again. However, here's the news for those who are looking for an excuse to get out their phones or laptops in class:

» Student's are saving more money this semester by renting textbooks? Yes, at Vol State and MTSU. As a matter of fact, this is a great deal for students as the rules allow students to dog-ear pages, highlight, and write in the margins.

» Tony Giarratana should receive a medal for persistence for his continued efforts to get May Town Center off the ground. He has asked the planning commission to rehear their zoning request for MTC. If approved, this would bring a major corporate HQ campus and mixed-use area for Davidson County.

» His name is Kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, ... Kid Rock. Okay, so that song stinks, but so may Kid Rock's new clothing line "Made in Nashville," highlighting our very own, respectable and much loved Music City. Heaven help us...

» For you soccer fans, Nashville is in the running for the FIFA World Cup, ... in 2018 or 2022. LP Field made the cut from 45 cities whittled down to 27. If Nashville is chosen by that point, hopefully we won't be known for our own clothing line.

» Motorcycle giant Harley-Davidson is scouting locations in Murfreesboro for a new plant. However, Kentucky and Indiana are also on that list. Harley wants to build a new plant if their plant in York, PA goes bankrupt.

» The Homelessness Commission wants to raise $72M dollars to stop chronic homelessness. Over the next five years, the Homelessness Commission will have to work within the private and public sector to raise the money.

» And finally, it's time to pat ourselves on the back. Lipscomb was ranked in US News and World Report's as one of the Top Up-and-Coming Master's Degree's in the South. Go us.

photo_mascot.jpg

We were amused to see that LIFE magazine has named the Vanderbilt Commodore as one of the creepiest mascots in the country.  Pepperdine's Willie the Wave also made the list .  Lou Bison may not be the best lookin guy on the block, but at least we're not afraid to sit next to him at the game.  Still, we may be a little jealous of Willie the Wave's hair and probably couldn't pass up the chance to touch the Commodore's sideburns.

The 2009 season is looking especially promising for our women's volleyball team and men's soccer team. Lipscomb's women's volleyball team is ranked #1 in the ASun preseason poll, and our men's soccer team is ranked #3. What's more, two of our athletes have been selected as ASun preseason player of the year. Check out these interviews with ace volleyball player Alex Kelly, and soccer stud, Miguel DaSilva.

This is where we'll be at some point today: outside Starbucks, relaxing and listening to people catching up in the Square. It's good to be back and we're excited for this school year.

Good morning, LU! We're up and ready to hit some classes, but first and foremost... we've got the Roundup.

» Music people, get ready! Students are now able to register for practically any seat for the Nashville Symphony upcoming season using Soundcheck. Soundcheck allows students to get up to two tickets for $10 to select Symphony concerts. Register here.

» A Gallatin animal shelter got creative in finding funds and opened a thrift store to help raise money and awareness.

» You must have taken our weekend advice this past weekend and attended the Wilson County Fair.. because if you didn't, well, 106,000 other people did.. setting a record for one-day attendance!

» Three schools were placed on lockdown Friday afternoon while police searched for a burglary suspect. This reminds us of Lipscomb's lockdown back in Spring 2007 while police searched for an escaped juvenile... Good memories.

» It looks like the Kingston Ash Spill will take about three years to clean up... Or at least that's the plan.
kathrynclaire.jpg
Kathryn-Claire Watts is a sophomore at Lipscomb. She will be studying abroad with Lipscomb in Vienna this Fall. She is still deciding her major, but hopes to be a photographer someday.

I was going to write this post yesterday since we girls in the office were discussing it then, but I decided to hold off until today because I had already posted something.

Jill, Elizabeth, Brittany, and I brought up the notion that romance as we see in the movies had seriously corrupted how we see romance in real life. With a few exceptions, no man in real life has ever come close to our expectations. While boys I've come across are sweet, they have no thought processes remotely close to what boys in the movies have. Or "have". Because you know some woman writer somewhere came up with this sticky sweet sap that men in movies throw up in girls' faces.

And it has gotten so bad that if a movie actually portrays a relationship like you would see in real life, I am so critical about it that I end up being mad at it. (see 500 Days of Summer. Apparently very realistic, but all I could see was that I was mad at Zoey Deschanel, however a very very sweet cute movie :D )

If you're an upperclassman with nothing to do this weekend besides moving in (the freshmen are well-occupied with awesome Quest activities), we've got some ideas.

FRIDAY
» Taming of the Shrew at Shakespeare in the Park
» Fab Four Festival at Cannery Ballroom (Beatle's inspired!)
» Space Capone at 12th & Porter

SATURDAY

SUNDAY
» Church!
» Get ready for classes!

Quest 2k9

Let's take a second to applaud these fine folks: the Quest Team for 2009. They have poured countless hours into preparing for Advance and Quest, and they've worked hard to make our new freshmen truly feel like Lipscomb is a place they can call home.
Good morning, LU! Wow. The last Friday before classes start. Next time we post we'll be back in the swing of classes! Here's the Roundup:

» If you've got one of those clunkers, you better act fast! The Cash for Clunkers program will be ending on Monday. Last one there's a rotten egg!

» Metro police always have something to do when the sun goes down. A nine-year-old took her grandparents' car and lead police in a high-speed chase. Wow.

» After the high speed chase, the Metro police then ran into a Titan player.. A drunk Titan player. They promptly arrested him with a DUI. Whoops.

» There is going to be a dragon boat festival down at Riverfront. We think it's going to be pretty awesome, so you should go.

» If you're looking for a way to relax and focus before school starts, try the Sommet center tonight. Matt Redman will be a guest for worship.

» There's a 5k happening in Cookeville. It's called the Howl at the Moon 5k. Interesting...

» Finally, we love free things!! And we love the Frist. So tonight is a college night which means college students can get in free. Take advantage of this, they have a great exhibit right now featuring Chuck Close!
jake burton.jpg

Jake Burton is doing mission work this summer in Jamaica. He graduated this past Spring and graduated with a ministry degree.

I have the hardest time starting a writing project, as I do now. Maybe it is because I don't really think too much about what I am going to write before hand, and I just sit and share what's been going on. This leads me to two possibilities for my current place living in Jamaica. The first is that I just "word vomit" the emotions and feelings that are swimming inside of me. Often these thoughts come out as honest but often beyond understanding for the normal reader. I suppose these are the thoughts I would share to a counselor if I had one, but I am not really sure to look for one in Jamaica, ha. The second course that I can take is just a factual review of the days I have been through here. This would conclude more like a journal of my activities saying, "Monday, I did this and I saw that."

The problem in this is that often neither of these options really tell you what is really going on. I would love to fluff things up, and tell you of the amazing experiences I have had with God revealing himself to my heart and opening doors for ministry here in Jamaica. I would love to tell you that God is changing me and making me more patient, loving, compassionate, and bold. But often I find here that I have become more aware of my weaknesses than my strengths.

union station.jpg

Another part of Nashville's history? Union Station. The now beautiful hotel and restaurant used to be a major train station and still holds all the history of that identity. We recommend a visit and we also recommend you take your camera.
Good morning, LU! It's another cloudy day, but we're okay with that. We hope the freshmen are enjoying Quest as much as we did when we were freshmen.. but we're ready for school to start. Here's the Roundup!

» Bill Frist (former Tennessee senator) used the Cash for Clunkers program to trade in his car and buy a new Prius. Way to be green, Frist!

» We used to think police officers were super-human. Well, that's not true. One officer fell asleep on the job and is being suspended... maybe she'll take the time to catch up on sleep?

» If you like to hear touching, true-life stories, you should definitely check this one out. One young teen lost his life due to a car crash and because he was an organ donor saved five lives and affected seventy-seven. Incredible.

» If you're looking for a new place, Billy Joel is selling his Hamptons home for a modest $35 million. Yeah. As if that's cheap.

» We love new coins! And so does the government! A new one dollar coin is being released in honor of James K. Polk in Columbia, Tennessee. We're excited to come across it.

» Visit Centennial tonight for a little culture! Taming of the Shrew is the show tonight for Shakespeare in the Park and we hear it has a '60's flare. You should go. It should be a gas. (Yes, we did just say that.)

Many of you may remember Singarama 2009: Branded from this past Spring. Luckily, we stumbled across the host's music video on YouTube. Enjoy!

Brandon Greer does not have a website (that we know of), but does have a pretty impressive Flickr account displaying both his film and digital work. He was an art student at Lipscomb University but later transferred to Watkins College of Art and Design to study photography more in depth. He is young and talented and frankly we won't be surprised if he ends up being the next Annie Lebowitz.

This was taken by alumni Clint Williams at the Country Music Hall of Fame. If you haven't been to visit yet, it's a very interesting place and full of fascinating history. After all, Nashville was where country music was born, so in the spirit of Music City, USA, we suggest you visit the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Good morning, LU. This time next week we'll already be in the swing of things! We're excited, but we're hoping to enjoy these last few days of summer relaxation. Here's the Roundup:

» If you're fond of the Nashville Scene (a local magazine), you'll be interested to know that SouthComm just acquired the magazine. We're hoping they don't change much!

» A nonprofit clinic is treating uninsured patients. Funded by private donors, churches, and others, the clinic is a live saver to many.

» If you see rain again today, don't be surprised! Hurricane Bill has reached a category four and rains are expected to reach all the way in, yes, Nashville.

» Some WuLU staff were in Starbucks today and noticed a new penny. We investigated and found that four new pennies have been released - so don't be confused if you see them beginning to circulate!

» Give blood! It's always a good way to help out, and right now you will be entered to win free Taylor Swift concert tickets. Give life, give blood, get free Taylor Swift tickets.

» Follett is trying out a new program at Vol State where students can save hundreds of dollars by renting textbooks. Let's hope they bring this to Lipscomb!

» And of course, our ritual Wednesday Arby's freebies! Today if you buy a sandwich you will get a free fruit tea...Worth it!

We get nostalgic when we think of the Bison Room (which no longer exists) in 2006, well-equipped with arcade games and a sketchy movie room. But, wow. This is what the Bison Room looked like in 1980! Talk about nostalgia...
Good morning, LU! It's pretty nasty outside but lucky for you you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the Roundup!

» Just incase you're wondering when you can finally hit the pool, check out the forecast.

» A Guinness World Record was set recently! A giant cupcake, weighing in at 1,224 lbs has taken the lead as the world's largest cupcake. The world's largest stomach ache is yet to be determined.

» If you've been worried about the girl who got hit on her way to school, we've got good news! She has undergone surgery and her status has been updated to stable. The driver responsible is not facing any charges because they broke no laws.

» The rumors are true. Quest 2009 is officially underway (as of 2pm today)! We've got some great memories from Quest in years past, and we're sure that they'll only be added to this year. Welcome, freshmen!

» The Convention Center is proving to be a bit of a pill, and we're hoping they won't spend too much. The allotted $75,000 some how "ballooned" to $450,000. As a result, the PR firm handling the center resigned. Yikes!

» Davidson County should host Bonnaroo. Why? Because Coffee County is expecting $100,000 in fines from Bonnaroo. Wooowww.
Service is a huge part of Lipscomb's atmosphere, and if you'd like ideas of how you can serve in our community you're in luck! We've got them for you!

» We mentioned this last week, but if you are willing and able freshmen are moving in both today and tomorrow and we're pretty sure they can use all the help they can get, so pitch in!

» Check out Habitat for Humanity. They're always looking for helpers!

» Volunteer at the local VA to help honor and serve our veterans.

» Help out with Meals on Wheels - always a great organization to be a part of.

We thought as a word of wise to the new freshmen we'd suggest buying a Nalgene water bottle. Because if you've been at Lipscomb for longer than a year, you may have noticed that everyone seems to have one. So if you're nervous about fitting in, we've got them at the bookstore. (We're just joking.)

A former Lipscomb student (Brandon Greer - left to attend an art school) snapped this photo with his Polaroid camera, and has a lot of excellent photography to view on his Flickr page. In fact, you may see him featured as our next Local Artist.. Stay tuned!
Good morning, LU! And good morning to all of our Advance 3 freshmen! We're ready for the very last week of summer, and we've got all sorts of news for you!

» The Franklin town hall meeting to discuss health reform had an excellent turn out. In fact it was so good that not everyone could fit!

» A four-year-old was named junior deputy state fire marshal because of her heroic actions in recognizing a fire and letting her grandparents know.

» The Clarksville 911 system now receives text messages and other forms of media such as video and pictures. The system received an upgrade which all 911 systems in the state will soon be receiving.

» Today begins Advance 3! If you see extra bodies on campus, be sure to welcome them to Lipscomb!

» Eleven-year-old Damon Weaver finally got to interview Obama - which he's been trying to do for awhile. At the tender age of eleven, he already has a full scholarship to Albany State University and is the main broadcaster at this school's TV network.

» Local Tennesseans are working to stop nuclear dumping in Tennessee (thank you!) with legislative action. Let's all hope it works so our kids don't end up with three arms...

Rebekah Osteen is a senior at Lipscomb University. She is a Graphic Design major but enjoys photography and hopes to pursue a career in it in the future. You can access her blog here.

Well, before I tell you how I met Glenda today, here's how I spent my Friday afternoon...

I grabbed my camera, Bible, and journal, and hopped in my car and headed downtown. This afternoon was absolutely gorgeous and I really just wanted to drive around with no real sense of direction, and maybe take some pictures along the way. My adventure started at Centennial Park where I sat for about an hour, where I prayed over our city and worshipped.

Next stop was Capitol hill. I love this place mainly because of the view. It overlooks Bicentennial Mall and is at one of the highest points in all of downtown Nashville.

Then, I went over to Marathon Village. Marathon Village is a small community of designers, photographers, film producers, and other artists. Where it is located is in the old Marathon Motors warehouse. Needless to say, there's alot of history here.

We've got the weekend lined up for you - say hello to entertainment!

One thing this Fall we can look forward to: the incredible sunsets. This was taken on campus, and we can't pretend that it doesn't make us excited for everyone to be back on campus. Let's all take a moment to be grateful that we live in such a beautiful city that provides such an incredible backdrop... Lipscomb couldn't be Lipscomb without Nashville.

Good morning, LU! It's pretty hot out there so we suggest you get inside and take some time to check out the Roundup while you cool off!

» Watch out for falling fish! A bird lost hold of its catch and the fish smashed a woman's windshield in Ohio.

» Jazz guitarist Les Paul died at age 94 from pneumonia. Fans are paying respects via Facebook, Twitter, and other means.

» If you conveniently "forgot" to pay your parking ticket in 2006, 2007, or 2008, you may receive amnesty and be able to get off the hook with only half the ticket payment. Pretty sweet deal!

» Last night health care reform supporters gathered at Centennial Park to show their support. Those against the reform also showed up, but didn't match their numbers.

» If traffic seemed heavier on your way to work this morning, you weren't imagining things. Schools started today, and with that you may need to leave your house a little earlier.. like fourty-five minutes earlier, knowing Nashville.

» There was an anthrax scare downtown this morning, but everything was resolved and the powder was declared non-toxic. How's that for a throwback?

» Swine flu may have subsided, but the swine haven't. Some pigs in Madison got out of their pen and proceeded to take over a neighborhood. After a hefty police chase, they are safely back home.
maryanne copy.jpg
Maryanne Rieder is a junior at Lipscomb. She is a Family Relations major and her favorite things on campus are intramurals and spending time with friends. For more of her thoughts, you can access her blog here.

Yesterday, I went to atlanta with Mayfair's college group. We did the water park/braves game combo, it was a great trip. On the way home, Doug, our college minister, was talking to some people, having one of those real talk conversations that seem to only happen in the back of a church bus after a long day. They were talking about faith, and I was eavesdropping as I watched the lightning storm dance around in the night sky. Faith, for some reason, seems to make more sense when you're watching a lightning storm, it's something about how powerful, yet unpredictable it is. Anyway, as they were talking, in the back of the bus, Doug said something I haven't been able to get out of my head since. He said this:

"We don't need faith."

Ouch. Those words stung, somehow more than the crappy shower water at the water park had earlier that day. They stung b/c I know they are true.
It's tragic really. We've (christians) lost our need for faith. We don't need faith. Think about it to yourself-what do we ever do that requires real faith? We're in control of every aspect of our lives. When do we ever step away from what we know, adventure past the outcomes we expect, and rely on nothing but God to get us through? When do we put ourselves in situations we are unsure of, scared of even, and rely on faith?

Last night my mother and I went to Lime which is located on the cuter congested end of Broadway. We were staying at Embassy Suites since we were going to be in town late and needed a near by restaurant to eat at before a concert downtown. She had suggested Lime earlier in the week and called it a Latin Fusion restaurant. As we pulled in I could tell that it was pretty fancy schmancy since there was a valet booth set up out front. Though maybe the booth was there more to announce that there was actually a restaurant there since it was pretty inconspicuously placed on the road. I must admit I never had noticed it before either.

There's not a lot to say about this striking picture of The Parthenon other than we would like to think this is how it looked in Ancient Greece,... yes, with the lights too.

But not likely.

Morning Roundup

The weather is beautiful in Nashville today! We're hoping it will last through the weekend. Here's the roundup:

» Otter Creek Church of Christ and Temple Congregation Ohabai Sholom held a joint fundraising event at Otter Creek's church to raise awareness for Tent City, a homeless community downtown.

» United States Representative Jim Cooper has cancelled his appearance at a Town Hall Tea Party Meeting at a local school later this week. Parents are happy since their children's first day of school won't be interrupted. Parents are upset that Cooper won't be there.

» The Nashville Symphony may have to make cuts due to their grant being rejected by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission. We hope it doesn't come to that since it's hard to have a symphony without oboes or timpani's.

» Tennessee has seen higher tourism due to the economy, but aren't giving their dollars to hotels. Recent studies show that vacationers are staying with distant family or taking shorter day trips.

» H3GM, a local Nashville law firm, was the victim of embezzlement and forgery. One of their own bookkeepers apparently wrote more than one check within a years time in excess of $50,000... to themselves.

» Country music star Tracy Lawerence was hospitalized this week for pneumonia. Doctors say that every light in his house is off so he can sleep.

» The MDHA picked Marriot this week to run the Music City Center hotel in the SoBro district of downtown Nashville.

» The Office of Admissions Summer Scholar's program was featured as a news item on the Lipscomb homepage. See the full story here.

» And finally, Peter Jackson's new movie District 9 is proving to be a sci-fi thriller evoking themes of segregation, government lies and conspiracy.

Let's be honest. Do we miss these days? It's nice to get out of class every once in awhile, but week after week? Hopefully we'll have better weather this year!

The dog days of summer are almost over with. Unfortunately, the end of summer does not bring the heat with it, so make sure to follow this girl's lead and continue your summer ice-cream romance. She actually looks like she's holding a Lipton Green Tea bottle, but you get the idea. Go eat some ice cream.
Good morning, LU! Welcome to hump day, we're happy to be here and we hope you are, too. And now for the Roundup:

» Keep an eye out for Katelyn Ranee Cole. An Amber Alert was issued last night after she went missing.

» Bad news for us college kids: many states are cutting financial aid! Great. Now we'll actually have to give them our arm and our leg.

» If you're into the live music scene, check out LYLAS today at Grimey's. It's free and one of our favorite bloggers, NashvilleForFree, gives a good review.

» Our favorite part of Wednesday? Arby's Freebies! Today get a free roast chicken club with the purchase of a soft drink. You can use the money you save to go toward the financial aid the state isn't giving anymore!

» Leave your Southern pride in the parking lot when walking into school. Judges ruled that a belt with the Confederate flag on it could cause a disturbance and was not protected by free speech. Oh, the spoils of war.

» Good thing we've made it to college - public schools across Tennessee are getting harder! Schools are amping up curriculums and are not having a hard time talking about it.

» Due to the economy, community colleges are seeing massive growth. In the past year at Nashville State enrollment rose by 65%!

Those Forsaken by Death

By: Wes S. Welch

Those who fear death know not they're mistaken
Living their life hoping it's never taken
But we know better, we wish we could die
We've heard every truth, we've heard every lie
For we are those that death has forsaken

We once believed our life was a gift
Living eternally in this timeless rift
But as centuries went by, our lives grew worse
We recognized our gift as the worst kind of curse
Now we long for our curse to lift

New are born but old never die
Our population grows, always reaching for the sky
New beginnings come often, but never the end
Living so long the days start to blend
Our breath becoming one eternal sigh

***Update***
Thanks to WuLU follower Adam, you can check out all you need to know about the Nashville Rollergirls here.

Morning Roundup

After thunderstorms and an awesome lightning show last night, we're sure there's got to be news about that. Hopefully not all of it will be weather related:

» Nashville country-music duo giant Brooks and Dunn are parting ways. After close to 20 years of playing music together, the pair are ending their ride together

» You might remember the TVA ash spill over eight months ago in Oak Ridge. TVA has decided to restructure their methods of storing the wet ash, which in turn, will prevent future spills.

» Local Church leaders have joined the fight against the President's new health reform plan

» The Fisk University Art Collection featuring work from Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz which has been treated like a child in a nasty divorce, ... is now back open for the public. The newly renovated gallery is bringing in people from all over.

» Nashville's very own Nashville Public Television (NPT) won the My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement for its Next Door Neighbor's program.

» Cumberland Pharmaceutical's is slated to go public on the NASDAQ today.

» Upset parents are filing complaints because their girls soccer team cannot play on school fields.

» And finally, if you are interested in being a part of a swine flu vaccine study, Vanderbilt is looking for human guinea pigs!
If you're looking for opportunities to serve, you're at the right place.

» If you're comfortable with reading, you should become a reading partner for the PENCIL foundation.
» Also, if you're comfortable with math, you should become a math partner for the PENCIL foundation. Imagine that!
» Freshmen move in this Saturday and the following Monday, so if you're not doing anything there are definitely places to help out on campus moving people in! Visit campus either of those days to help, and we recommend you wear a Lipscomb shirt to help identify yourself!
» If you're looking for a different kind of volunteering experience, try helping with a local radiothon!

In the spirit of Fall Semester, we thought we'd get excited about Fall in Nashville! We're ready for everyone to be back on campus. For leaves to be falling, and for frisbees to be flying. We're ready for school to start. And we hope those freshmen are - they're going to be here this week! We hope you're ready, too.

D-day for the start of school is two weeks away! In these last two weeks of summer, we're sure there will be some great news to talk about. Let's see what's going on today:

» For all of you living under a rock, the Titans pulled out a 21-18 win vs. the Bills in the Hall of Fame Game yesterday. Go Titans go!

» Sadly, the suffering economy has resulted in animal-owners abandoning their pets at roadsides or parks. If you're interested, there are two boxers up for adoption.

» Tax-free weekend turned out to be a raging success. People came out for new computers, clothes, school supplies, and shoes. Tennessee residents were slated to save $12-14 million.

» You can put your pleather and old, cut-off MTV shirt away. Def Leppard has cancelled their concert for tonight. They are touring with Cheap Trick and Poison. WuLU wonders if this incident had anything to do with it.

» The Senate is going to keep the Cash for Clunkers alive, ... until the approved $2 Billion extension runs out.

» Southwest saw a 5% rise in passenger traffic this last month. We LUV that.

» Forecasting for the coming 2010 elections, voting machines are going to have to use paper-bases voting machines by then, a new state law says. Listen to the story here.

» And finally, Nissan has introduced the LEAF, a 100% electric, 0% emissions car to be manufactured for use by next year. Check out the Nissan site here
If you're the kind of person who needs a plan - we've got one for this weekend. Enjoy!

If you're planning on going to the event tonight at the Frist, you should also enjoy the history of the building while you're there. The Frist Center used to be the main post office in Nashville, and has a lot of stories to tell. Ask an attendant for the scoop - it's definitely worth it!

Good morning, LU! Although we've been on vacation for the first of the week, we can't deny that we're happy it's Friday! For everything going on today, we've got the Roundup.

» For us college kids, it's going to be a great weekend. The Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday begins today (we could use a break!). Items that apply: Computers $1500 or less, clothing $100 or less, and school supplies $100 or less.

» If you're looking for a free cultural experience, check out "A Night With Philip Glass" at the Frist. Starts at 6:30 and it's completely free. Music, art, and film. That's how life should be.

» If you notice something different on the Titans' helmets, it's probably the decal they are putting on in honor of McNair. Watch for it!

» If you're looking to get a henna tattoo any time soon, you may not want to do it at the Opry Mills kiosk. One girl is suing because her henna tattoo left a scar!

» Tennessee is getting 2,500 charging stations for electric cars. Considering we're one of the first in the South, this is a huge deal and we're pretty excited about it. Lipscomb loves green!

» Check out the Tomato Fest in East Nashville this weekend! Five points is SHUT DOWN for this event - it's going to be huge!

While I was in Africa, I caught several glimpses of true community. I saw what it can look like when people look after the needs of each other before the needs of themselves. It didn't take long to witness this. On our way to the Village of Hope from the airport, it began to rain, and it began to flashflood. We were in a bus, so we were affected much less than the people that were driving around in small cars, especially taxi drivers. As the waters rose, it did not take long for the waters to reach the doors of smaller vehicles. Once that happened, traffic stopped. It did not matter that our vehicle could handle the floods. The smaller vehicles could not, so we stood still.

As we sat in our bus, dry, we witnessed men and women coming to each other's aid. People jumped out of their cars to begin directing traffic as they fought against time to move all of the vehicles before water destroyed them. For the cars that could not move in the water, people got out in pushed. People that did not know each other helped each other because that is what they knew to be right. With the help of several men directing traffic, we were even able to turn our bus around in the bumper to bumper traffic.

If you've ever loved the spontaneous fountains in Disney, Atlanta, and other places.. you should probably pay ours a visit downtown. In front of the courthouse or at Bicentennial Mall, this is definitely a fountain you'll want to enjoy.

Morning Roundup

We've been on vacation for the past few days, but that doesn't mean we have nothing to talk about. Here's the roundup:

» Nashville residents are upset at local visitors to Lover's Circle, a high point in Nashville that over looks the city. Visitors to Lover's Circle are making too much noise, partying and graffitiing every concrete block in sight.

» An epidemic! The geese at Centennial Park are dying off, park officials say, due to botulism. However, this is not endangering any humans.

» 78 year old, Cecil Rowe, is the oldest person to complete hiking all of the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Forest.

» Compassion comes from all sources. Kid Rock sent a Pizza delivery man who was attacked in a robbery last week. Rock sent the man $1500.00 to help out with his surgery.

» Mayor Dean has suspended all work from Nashville-based marketing/pr firm McNeely Piggot & Fox until further notice. Apparently, there is some confusion on how much the firm projected to invoice the city and how much they actually did for the new convention center.

» A Night Out Against Crime seems to have spurred more neighborhood organizations and coalitions to fight crime in their communities.

» We have named a new Dean for the College of Arts & Sciences. Nashville Business Journal reports here, and we do too, here

» The Velocity is suing railroad giant CSX for claims that the high-rise condo project did not clean up environmental waste predating construction.

» And finally, a Nashville man escaped a home fire thanks to his fire alarm. He was sleeping, and woke up when he heard the alarm sounding. He was not harmed in the fire.
