Word on the street is Donald Miller will be speaking in Nashville on October 15.  Where?  Apparently he hasn't decided yet.  Lipscomb student Michael Gilbert has taken it upon himself to lead the campaign to bring the writer to our campus:

RT @mThomasGilbert: @donmilleris Come to Lipscomb University for your October 15 tour date

If you'd like to see Don Miller on campus in October, follow Gilbert's example and shout to the Twittersphere.

The Baptism
By: Rebecca Curry

The most important decision to ever be made,
Lies within the heart and water's bade;
To know the many guidelines of life, that book
Will tell the needed instructions often took;
Though the evil persists to tear one's heart,
Good prevails as the slicing of a dart,
Good can save all lives if tried,
              Its power reigns on high.

Peering at the glassy water's face,
It shines with stillness leaving some to chase;
What mercy lies beneath the cleansing flow
All God's people now and forever should go.
It lends itself to one much greater cause
The symbolism of Christ leads some to pause,
Its purpose known throughout the times,
              It will live forever.

Downtown Nashville is sprinkled with great little spots like this one. This building is right off 3rd avenue, and is in the heart of the SoBro part of Nashville. This exterior lettering authenticates the genuine nature of this building as well as the sign out front.

Morning Roundup

This is day two of blue skies and mid 80s. The apocalypse must be coming... Or maybe that's just the riverfront fireworks show for the 4th. Either way, here's the roundup.

» Make sure you check out the new library times before you try and go find that curious george book. The metro libraries are under new operating hours now.

» If you're unhappy how you're are being represented in Washington, then make sure you try and attend one of these tea parties, either for, or against your representative. Or, if you're bored, it would be a good way to see an antiquated way of protest being reborn.

» Look out! If you happen to be backstage at the Opry or Ryman and run into Ricky Skaggs, you may get shot...... by a camera. He keeps one on him to document those great moments backstage. You can catch Skaggs this Thursday night at The Ryman.

» Just because you don't have any money left doesn't make you free from responsibility. GM finally decided to assume liability for customers injuries while in their cars.

» Governor Phil Bredesen finally signed the SB 2133 bill, which makes it easier for students to enroll in charter schools if they are a priority academically

» If you're headed to church camp, make sure you get your flu shots. 15 campers were diagnosed with the flu which cut the camp short and Wednesday services tomorrow.

» And finally, Harpeth Hills Church of Christ's youth group is back safely after being in the midst of the turmoil in Honduras last week. The president was overthrown.... all while the group was there doing missions work. WuLU is glad for their safe return!

And not-to-be-missed, our Tokens Radio Players dishing up the finest satire the Bible Belt affords. Recorded before a live audience March 3, 2009 at Alumni Auditorium at Lipscomb University.

Morning Roundup

It's 88°F today in Nashville which means the greater metropolitan populous is thankfully happy about the weather. Humidity is low, and the skies are blue. Here's the roundup:

» More than 600 Buddhist monks paid their respects to their late beloved spiritual leader on Sunday. The funeral was held at the Buddhist temple and lasted three days.

» Kimberly Williams Paisley is keeping her husband on the right note. Apparently, he played a song for her and she didn't like it. She was expecting him to go up on a certain part of the song and he didn't. You can read the funny story here.

» WuLU loves Lavender. So does the Tennessean. Read about 10 ways to chill out this summer using the scented plant.

» Some confusion has ensued about the Metro Planning Commission's vote to not approve the May Town Center Development in Bell's Bend. Councilman Lonnell Matthews also is unsure of the vote happening on July 7 as well.

» Lipscomb University will be hosting the A-Sun Baseball Tournament in 2010 and 2011. This news comes after Lipscomb finished hosting the A-Sun Basketball Tournament in 2008 and 2009.

» School's out.... for water. A sprinkler head broke at Martin Luther King magnet school, which shut down the school. Unfortunately, students were not in school.

» Maury county officials are looking for funding to help offset some of the financial stress that Columbia GM workers are going through after their company filed bankruptcy.

» And finally, Nashville universities are playing a major role in higher education in Iraq. Administrators from Belmont, Tennessee Tech and Meharry Medical College have returned from helping train colleagues in the middle east.

You've seen him in the classroom, now watch him on TV.  Lipscomb history professor Dr. David Lawrence will discuss recent events in Iran on Inside Politics. The program airs:

Nice job, Mike!  Thanks for your hard work to help out students!  (Sorry it took us over a week to post about your accomplishment)

iceCream.jpgWhat?  Are we just victims of a mirage on this hot June day, or is there actually an ice cream truck in the middle of Bison Square?

Yep.  Definitely an ice cream truck.  An ice cream truck that appears to be handing out free ice cream even.  If you're on campus, now might be a good time to pretend to be an Impact camper.

Baptismal Rapprochement Between Southern Baptists and Churches of Christ?

Just as Zurich ("Zwinglianism") and Geneva ("Calvinianism") found sacramental common ground in the Consensus Tigurinus, my paper at the 2009 Christian Scholar's Conference explored whether such a rapprochement is possible between Southern Baptists and Churches of Christ who, in many ways, are the credobaptistic heirs of Zurich and Geneva. Since there is presently a renewed discussion among Southern Baptists and British Baptists concerning baptismal "sacramentalism" and there is also a new openness among Churches of Christ toward a more historic Calvinian understanding of baptism as a means of grace, there is hope for some kind of "rapprochement" between Southern Baptists and Churches of Christ in the United States. With historical perspective and theological reflection Churches of Christ and Southern Baptists are potentially on the verge of a Consensus Americanus.

Morning Roundup

After a long, hard, hot, humid and incredibly busy week, we are all excited to have the weekend at our toes. What's been going on in Nashville today? Here's the roundup:

» Maytown Center may never see the light of day. Last night at the public hearing with the Metro Planning Commission, the vote turned out 4 for, and 6 against. This means developers will have to get even more metro council members to vote for it on July 7.

» On a cheesier note (pun intended, you'll see why), a couple was charged in Shelbyville for domestic assault... using Cheetos. Is there really anything to say other than they really are dangerously cheesy?

» Not only is Chattanooga getting a VW car plant, but now the Choo-Choo city will be getting a car parts company, Gestamp. This plant will create 230 jobs, and supplies parts to companies like Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, and General Motors.

» Nashville's historic Hermitage Hotel was ranked in the top 10 historic hotels by AAA. The Hermitage Hotel is the only 5-diamond hotel to make the top 10. How cool is that?

» In our ever-growing downtown area, sometimes projects don't work out. John Cheadle is one man who has picked up three projects that failed--and is slated/determined to make them work. Fingers crossed.

» And finally, for those of you who watch CSI and wish you could be a forensic scientist, listen to this. A Fernvale 9-year-old boy found a Paleozoic fossil (that's 250 million years old) and brought it to  show and tell at his nature park summer camp. Don't underestimate the power of digging.

Relevant Topics: Gifts

Laansma.jpg

Gifts are so wonderful. I love them regardless of the season or who gives them to me. I look at my stuff and realize that a lot of it are gifts given to me by others. Though whenever I first look at it, the fact that it's a gift does not come to mind. In fact I have to really think about who it was that gave me the gift. I consider letters a gift too, and I like them a lot because you don't have to think about who gave it to you. They make up the letter themselves. There are some other gifts that carry this importance with it.

I'm ashamed to say that I often think of salvation in the former way. I so often fail to see God in that gift. I don't think I'm alone in my thinking about this, so I ask the question, why? Why can't we see God in salvation as clearly as we see another person in a letter they send us? I think it's because we truly are doing things for our salvation, so that we can have everlasting life. So that we will not go to hell and be eternally damned. If we have this mentality as we live out our lives, we will completely miss out on who gave us this gift. Simply, we idolize our gift, not the Giver.

Jackson's

A favorite to many Lipscomb students, Jackson's is located in the quaint area down 12th Avenue before you hit Vanderbilt: Hillsboro Village. The restaurant's seating is mostly outside, but you can request to eat in if need be. We recommend eating outside so you can enjoy people watching and feel a true part of the Village Scene. The food is of an eclectic assortment, from croque monsieurs to torrados (lightly grilled wraps) or pasta, to their famous cookie dough egg rolls or butter cake. Although the atmosphere is appropriate for simple chats and dessert, don't skip out on a full meal at Jackson's or you'll be sure to regret it!

It's IMPACT week at Lipscomb.  IMPACT is a Christian camp that takes place on Lipscomb's campus every year. It consists of worship, small groups, classes, and hanging out with new friends. The kids stay in the dorms on campus and experience life on Lipscomb's campus for a week. From Morning Impact held in Allen Arena, with skits and songs, to prayer in small groups - IMPACT is known as a powerful camp that has changed thousands of teens' lives and in turn impacts the campus at Lipscomb as well.

City Math

Nashville's first Urban Outfitters used to be known as City Hall, one of Nashville's best music venues. It was a great medium between Exit/In and the Ryman for alternative acts (if you don't know how big those venues are, then you need to catch some shows there!) Alterna-Rockers Mute Math were able to play there before the hipster-trendsters bought out the venue. This shot truly encompasses their high-energy live show. Our question is this: where is the picture when he lands (if he lands)?
Good morning, LU! Do you know what happened on June 25, the 176th day of the year, in years past? Let us do the work for you. In 1947, The Diary of Anne Frank was published. And in 1982 Greece officially abolished the head shaving of recruits in the military. More? Try here. And now, for the Morning Roundup...

» A ten year old is working to become the next jump roping champion. With the level of technology kids have today, who knew jump ropes still existed?

» Take a peek at what the Lipscomb Summer Perth Mission team is dealing with in layovers at the Denver airport!

» If you see large snakes around, you should probably avoid them (if you don't already). Thanks to Florida, it's rumored that some Burmese Pythons are heading north.

» You may have heard about the bear pit that was discovered under a parking lot at Belmont, but did you hear that it may have been the house to exotic animals for the Acklen family (of Acklen Avenue)? Word is they kept bears, monkeys, alligators, and a mountain lion (WSMV).

» Enjoy the bluegrass night tonight at the Ryman.. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the twang.

» Just in case you haven't heard, don't forget that fireworks are not allowed in Franklin. Not. Even. Sparklers. Apparently the risk of fires is more important than celebrating our independence... ? (Good thing we'll be at Lipscomb for Summer Celebration's July 4th on the 3rd!)

» If you like your doughnuts with ice cream (?) you're in luck! Krispy Kreme just announced that they will be serving soft serve and sundae toppings at their stores!

» Finally, if you're looking to build a house... Okay, if you're interested in architecture and, well, large houses, check out the Dream Home forum tonight at Davis Kidd. 7pm and free - just the way we like it!

URGENT! The Nashville, TN postmaster Dave Vale is trying to "streamline" and reduce their "operating costs." So, they are trying to close the historic downtown Arcade Post Office. Help us save this Nashville treasure! You can either make your voice be heard on June 29, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at the downtown Nashville Public Library Auditorium, or just call the office at 615-872-5711. Either way, help us maintain this great location and vital part of the downtown arcade!
Good morning, LU. Today is supposed to be a bit cooler so we're hoping to enjoy that outside with the kids here for IMPACT. But for you all, we're here to catch you up on Nashville while you enjoy the weather.

» In case you were still wary of traveling I-40W, not to worry! The mobile home that got stuck under the Elm Hill Pike overpass has been successfully cleared. ...Thirty-six hours later.

» If you're an Apple nut like some of us here at WuLU, you've probably heard rumors about Steve Jobs having a liver transplant here in Nashville. Well we hate to disappoint, but it was actually in Memphis.

» Nashville just received a grant to help stop human trafficking in the city. This being a huge cause that a lot of our students at Lipscomb support, we're pretty excited.

» Pay day just can't come soon enough, but for those of you who are trying to make ends meet (or just looking for a good deal), it's yet again another Arby's Freebie Wednesday! At any participating Arby's you get a free roast beef regular sandwich with the purchase of a soft drink!

» Okay, so yes, Tennessee did reach the double digits for unemployment.. But hopefully with the Nissan Electric Car coming, we're supposed to be getting 1,300 more jobs for Tennessee!

» Going along with that, let's add to the number! VW announced that they will be hiring around 2,000 for their plant also! Maybe that just might put us back into the single digits? We're hoping.

» Harpeth Hall (a local girls private school) is helping to create an online school for girls. We see the possible benefits of schools for specific genders... but online? Still trying to figure that one out.

» Tomorrow at 4pm, check out Barbara Brown Taylor speaking at the Christian's Scholars Conference being hosted at Lipscomb!

» FINALLY, and most importantly, vote for Lipscomb in the Tennessean's "Toast of Music City" contest! Click here and select "Lipscomb University" from the list!

wheetley.jpgJulie Wheetley graduated from Lipscomb with a degree in Social Work. She currently works in the mission field.

Whats Up LU: Ms. Wheetley, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. In what did you major? Did you continue your education elsewhere post-undergrad?
Julie Wheetley: I majored in Social Work and moved to Guatemala a year after graduation to study Spanish.

WULU:
What did you do right out of college?
JW: Right out of college I worked for the organization where I interned my last semester of school (social work job).

WULU: What were some of the best experiences you had in college?
JW: Time with friends was the best, hanging out at my friends apartments having crazy dance parties, road trips, service club events like Scary Skate Date, and I liked being in my Bible classes too.

This is an inside look from the Parthenon at ESPN and ABC's filming for promotional/opening footage for Monday Night Football. If you look hard enough at the top, you can see the Grecian, doric columns that are not marble, but concrete reproductions. Either way, if the gods at Mount Olympus knew there was a promo being filmed in Athena's home, you know Ares and Poseidon would be the first to call captain.

Morning Roundup

Among the late storms/monsoon last night, Nashville's weather cooler off a bit just in time to see a beautiful sunset. Hopefully today the weather will break a little bit. What's new in Nashville? Here we go:

» If you're thinking, I want to get on film, then Nashville's Parthenon is your place. What? Yeah, ESPN and ABC are filming the Monday Night Football opening with the likes of Hank Williams Jr. and Gloria Estefan from 7PM to 2AM.

» For those NFL and Tennesse Titans enthusiasts out there, then Gridiron9 is the restaurant for you. Steve McNair recently just opened this place off of Jefferson Street.

» Would it surprise you if we told you that the director of Metro Public Schools recently said he doesn't expect improvement and on the contrary, expects TN test scores to fail for the sixth year in a row? Well, surprise, he did.

» Bell's Bend residents have released their own plan to economic growth within their area. This third "option" calls for $348 million dollars in revenue over 15 years. We wonder if that's before or after the state's unemployment rate of over 10% goes down. Just asking...

» Franklin has made the step to go green by purchasing a vehic---an electric motor on wheels that can carry a human, to help enforce traffic laws. We don't have a picture of it, but we have a good idea that it probably looks like every other small, compact, smart car that looks like it would fall apart if you sat in it.

» Sounds like someone either forgot to take money for the transaction, or just flat out stole $40,000 worth of concession goods at McGavock high school. But don't worry, they don't need the money or anything for education, because most of the student's won't pass anyway, right? (See above)

» The Nashville chapter of the AIGA held their annual local design awards yesterday. Check this article to see a list of those who won.

» Former Lipscomb High School student Blake Farmer, who reports for WPLN, talks about Universities helping out our men and women in the armed forces pursue their education, especially LU.

» Analysts say that with the rising gas prices as of late, most people are planning on staying home this July 4th, which means local fireworks shows, which means more injuries, which means stay away from hospitals on July 4.

And finally, U.S. Representative Jim Cooper will speak at Lipscomb on healthcare ethics. The information can be found right here.
Today our Volunteer Opportunities are geared towards the medically inclined - or just service inclined. Check 'em out!

Morning Roundup

It's a sweltering 84°F here in Nashville.... in the morning. Which means it can only get hotter. So take a minute in your air conditioning spot, and take a look at the roundup:

» Yesterday was the Summer Solstice, which means one thing, all of the remaining days of Summer will be shorter!

» The state of Tennessee was awarded a $53M stimulus for affordable housing. This money will be used to complete housing projects already in process or halted due to the economy.

» The Metro Planning Commission vote is coming up, so Bell's Bend is finding itself in the news again.

» Interested in finding out what Capitol Hill in TN passed for the state budget? Listen here.

» Gun maker Smith and Wesson recently bought Franklin-based company Universal Safety Response. This purchase will help S&W move into a non-firearm aspect of their business.

» Silver Eagle Bus has announced to make the move from Texas to Gallatin, TN, creating over 500 jobs for that area.

» And finally, getting the ball rolling on the Music City Center, two companies have already booked their place. The American Trucking Association and the American Choral Directors Association have claimed their spot there.....for the yet-to-be-built-building.

King,Seth.jpgSeth King is a senior Ministry major at Lipscomb and is spending part of his summer in Ghana, Africa, doing mission work.

During the past few days, healthcare has been all over the news. President Obama recently addressed the American Medical Association in order to give new light to this controversial issue. He addressed many misconceptions during his speech.

It isn't a secret that President Obama leans more towards a universal healthcare system than he does towards the traditional system. Many people are afraid that a universal healthcare system will lead to a government controlled healthcare system. This leads many people to think of the phrase "socialism," which leads to communism, which leads to dictators, etc. In other words, people see this as the beginning of the slippery slope.

There are two main criticisms of the universal system: the wait times and the treatment of doctors.

The wait time concern is probably a legitimate concern. If everyone had medical coverage and could go to the hospital when needed, it makes sense that wait times would be longer. Right now, 46 million Americans have no insurance at all, and there are many others that have sub-par coverage. Thus, they can only go to the hospital in dire circumstances. Once everyone has coverage, what will stop the hospital lines from lengthening? It would take time to work the kinks out of the system, but at least everyone would have coverage and the ability to go to the hospital rather than have to suffer because they cannot afford the visit.

Why don't we make this weekend a "take advantage of the strange things that Nashville sometimes offers" weekend? Okay!

FRI:
>> Never Ending Story at the Belcourt
>> Show at the Basement
>> A&W free root beer floats!

SAT:

>> Go on a Nashville ghost tour (we're not kidding)

SUN:

>> Go to church with your Dad

Now just try and tell us that all that doesn't sound fun. Good luck!

In honor of Friday, we wanted to encourage you to take the weekend to relax, enjoy Nashville, and enjoy the city life. We're lucky to live in such a beautiful place.
Good morning, LU. With the second day of Advance Session 1 upon us, you may be wondering what can get you away from the crowds on campus. Or just what is happening away from the crowds on campus. Don't worry. We've got you covered.

>> Although the new convention center has not even entered the planning stages, booking has already begun and is apparently doing rather well. Let's hope all goes as planned.

>> A&W learned a thing or two from Sonic and is giving away free root beer floats today from 2-8pm. You can also find deals for Father's Day this weekend there, too.

>> 'Tis the season for free public services. First fishing, then transportation... Now, state parks! This weekend a large majority of the national parks across the country have waived admission fees. Looks like it's time to go camping!

>> If you're looking for a blast from the past (or just craving the company of a giant dog other than Clifford), the Belcourt is showing the one, the only... Never Ending Story tonight! If that's not a throw back we don't know what is.

>> BNA has plans for some renovations. The Nashville airport is going to be expanding soon, and hopefully bringing business along with it.

>> If you've just moved to Nashville and you want to fit in, the Nashville Scene just did a story on what native Nashvillians eat that most visitors don't. They must be really busy over there...

>> Along with that story, the Scene also suggests that we watch the fish we are eating in order to be socially responsible. They suggest doing this with an iPhone. ...We never thought those three topics would be in one article together, either.

Emma Boyd is a senior at Lipscomb. She studies Law, Justice, and Society and is a music minor. She is spending her summer with her family in Chicago.

"Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, 'Do it again!'; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, 'Do it again!' to the sun, and every evening, 'Do it again!' to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity to make all daisies alike; it may be that God makes each daisie seperately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have all sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we."
-G.K. Chesterton

Since God is the wisest being and sees all evil, it is amazing to me that he is a joyful God! And we with our narrow views and limited understanding find evil to be too powerful. How arrogant we are to be less joyful than our Heavenly Father!

PM.jpg

PM is a restaurant located not 5 minutes from Lipscomb University on Belmont Boulevard. This is a local place that specializes in quality cuisine and great service. You can either eat outside or dine in the interior--either way, the food doesn't suffer from location. WuLU suggests to try their burger, which was marinated in some type of teriyaki sauce with a wasabi mayo, or their made-on-the-spot sushi (we suggest the Miami). The food is reasonably priced, almost a better choice than a restaurant chain. We suggest you try this place late on a Friday night, which seems to be the perfect time to go. PM is most definitely a quality place in which to add to your local favorite dives.

>> If you're going to be in Franklin today, don't bother taking your car - it's free transportation day!

>> Lucky for Lipscomb, the relative of the bison (the buffalo) is coming to Nashville in the form of statues. Could we BE any more excited?! Our bison statue will finally have some friends! (Other than the ones he made during that Macbook Pro competition.)

>> So in 2008 we finished our new residential hall, and it looks like Belmont got a little jealous! They just broke ground on a $20 million dollar dorm which will have an UNDERGROUND TUNNEL connecting it to the current freshman dorm. Come on now, this isn't a competition.

>> For some, middle school was the reign of the awkward years. For others, it's the reign of aggravated crime. Wait... what?

>> Can we appreciate for a moment that the Nashville Public Library (main branch) is having a Musical Petting Zoo today for free?! What exactly is a musical petting zoo? ...Your guess is as good as ours!

>> Don't get trampled! Campus will be busy today as the first session of Advance begins! Welcome, Freshmen! How will you know who is a freshman? Just watch for those who slip on the bricks in the Square. Don't worry, it's a rite of passage!

>> Next week won't be getting any less busy. IMPACT begins and Lipscomb Admissions is excited to be a part of it this year! If you stop by maybe you'll get to partake in some good old fashioned karaoke...

Okay so we hope this doesn't ever really happen to Nashville, but you've got to give this guy credit for such an imaginative video. Oh and the best part: there's more where this came from.

It's hard to see where Brad Paisley's guitar and shirt start and end. Or maybe they blend into each other? Either way, Brad rocked the CMT awards last night here in Nashville, TN. He won three awards and also inspired a new version of camo: Countryflauge

Morning Roundup

'Tis a rainy day in Nashville, especially after some pretty freaky weather yesterday. That didn't stop the CMT Video Awards from happening nor did it stop Taylor Swift from continuing to be awkward. Here's the roundup:

» Nashville has chosen the developers who will erect the Nashville Downtown Convention Hotel. Let's just hope their building doesn't turn out like this (note the car alarms).

» Meto has approved Mayor Carl Dean's $1.5B budget. This budget will eliminate over 70 jobs and freeze bonuses for the time being. How many twinkies can $1.5B buy you? Thanks Wolfram.

» Joshua Kellow can't seem to get his act together. From 2006 to present, he has had over 29 offenses charged him by Metro Police. Oh, we forgot to say that he tried to back into officers the other night and crashed his car into an intersection. Joshua--you're not Vin Diesel.

» Sorry Al, it seems that in order for you to stand with the likes of Athena, Jack Daniels, and Billy Graham....you have to be dead. State republican's have put a stop to an attempt to immortalize the likes of Al Gore and Cordell Hull.

» The Brookings Institute has ranked Nashville in the middle of the pack of recession metropolitan area's. At least we're not last?

» But in other news it seems as if we are close to last with our standardized tests. Ouch.

» And finally, if you're planning on going downtown for the 4th of July, the Nashville Star should have gotten their kinks worked out this year. You won't be seeing the fireworks from a train platform this year.

Adam Barney graduated with a degree in Engineering. He now works at Lockheed Martin and has worked on projects for NASA and military defense.

Whats Up LU: Mr. Barney, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. In what did you major? Did you continue your education elsewhere post-undergrad?
Adam Barney: I majored in Engineering Mechanics with a double minor in Pure and Applied Mathematics. I have taken one post graduate course, something like advanced engineering mathematics or something like that...i dont know if i am going to try for a masters degree or not yet.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?
AB: While I was looking for a full time engineering job I worked with Dr. Fort Gwinn in the RBJSE doing reseach for free-free modal vibration testing platforms for NASA's Orion Project. I have since taken a job with Lockheed Martin working on the THAAD missile defense program.

There was a time,
Before we were born
When "we" stood in the garden.
Or was it Los Angeles?
Either way,
"we" looked exactly how the Roman
Catholic Church wanted
Michelangelo to depict us:
Mythologized and eroticized.
We suffered a reversal as our
Red lips clasped
The green and/or red fruit
(I can't remember if we had our
own dish or communally shared)
and watched the brown,
quickly forming
over the flesh of
apple;
self;
we have no imagination.

If CMA Music Fest wasn't a big enough fix for your country music desire, then don't fret: the CMT awards are tonight in Nashville. Basically, Nashville is the place to be right now! Plenty of news to go around this morning:

» $60 million? What's $60 million? The difference in the budget that the house instituted over what the governor approved. That's our money by the way, in case you were wondering.

» The Metro Planning Department is suggesting to the Metro Planning Commission that they approve May Town Center. Check it out here too.

» Fisk University has just named a new provost as of yesterday. The new provost hails from The University of Nevada Las Vegas. You know what they say about Vegas...

» If sewing is your vice, then you may need to hold on a little tighter to the one you have. Over 700 sewing machines were stolen from a trucking lot in Donelson. Oh, it's not a big deal, just $400,000 in merchandise.

» GM wants Spring Hill to prove they want the plant. But of course it'll cost them. Wisconsin and Michigan are in the running too.

» And finally, CMA Music Fest saw it's biggest crowd yet, with over 56,000 people. Go Nashville!
This week for our Volunteer Opportunities we've found some interesting ones! We hope you'll take advantage of them - if not this week, maybe next?

>> If you find solace in a peaceful and quiet environment but you're looking to help the community with some volunteer work, try the Nashville Public Library. They're hoping for some extra shelvers, Children's Tour Leaders, Homework Helpers, and more. More information.

>> Okay this sounds SO fun. The Adventure Science Center needs volunteers! Who wouldn't want to spend some extra volunteer time at this awesome place? The center needs gift shop volunteers, special events volunteers, and other exciting volunteer jobs. More information.

>> Finally, if you're looking for a more traditional volunteer opportunity, try Hospital Hospitality House. This organization has Waiting Room Outreach, other specialized service projects, prepares meals for those at the house, and other awesome services to get involved in. More information.

Walking downtown you never know what you're going to run into. This was the case for WuLU one day a few weeks ago. We were exploring downtown and somewhat got reprimanded from an auto shop owner (weird story) when we stumbled on this little beauty. This is in the general vicinity as the Johnny Cash mural wall too.

What a weekend Nashville! Between CMA Music Fest, Bonaroo and all of the crazy weather, Nashville was a great place to be! Let's see what the news is:

» You're in the wrong job. Stop, I know you think we're being rude and don't have all the info, but Vanderbilt Dr. Carlos Arteaga is in charge of $15 million. For what you ask? Trying his hand at beating cancer.

» Shoulda been a girl scout. If so, and you happened to be in Pigeon Forge this weekend, you would have been surprised by Dolly Parton, who gave the scouts a special patch created in her honor.

» Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen is flexing a little bit in front of Metro Mayor Carl Dean. Bredesen is suggesting to Mayor Dean flex some of his own muscles if Tennessee Metro Schools test results don't come out well.

» Rolling Mill Hill developers are out of money. Thus the reason they couldn't keep utilities on and why their project went into receivership.

» Feel a little safer, or if you are against citizens owning guns, then be afraid, very afraid. Results show that gun permits are up by 120% in 2008. Someone needs to get in the market for an old style western gun saloon. Seriously...

» $635 million downtown mega-hotel project in SoBro could very well upset the market. Why? Check out the story here.

» Feel a little safer when you're at Wave Country near Opry Mills. The summer hot-stop is  safer now that security is a more prominent presence there.

» And finally, you can see all the pictures and more from this years Bonaroo here.

» The 5 Spot has Shoot The Mountain.

Jamin Rucker is a Lipscomb student working in a Colorado state park for the summer.

Here in lovely, beautiful Estes Park, nights are usually mild and uneventful.  The streets are deserted except for pizza deliveries and dudes on phones outside the main bar downtown.  One can walk to his destination without much fear of trouble.  People typically don't come knocking at your door late at night to bum off you, and the local river can be heard slowly draining the snowmelt into the Mississippi River Basin.

Why should Sunday night have been any different?  We had a moderately busy day at work, and Bell and I were pretty pooped after dinner.  We managed to go for a run around town and were calmly relaxing, watching the Rockies/Cardinals game rerun whilst conversing with our respective better halves.

Bedtime is approaching at a cheetah's pace. As I wrap things up with Caitlin, a soft knock imposes itself upon our cracked door.  The screen door is locked wide open, and through the sliver of the main door, I could see a streetlight and Marc's car.  No person, though.  I look at Bell.  It's 10:10.  Mostly everyone is asleep by now, at least those that have to work in the morning.  Who could it be?  Slowly, carefully, I open the door to see what the trouble is.........Michelle.

After an eventful night of storms and lightning, Nashville is enjoying its third day in a row of overcast skies. What's going on in Nashville?:

» Backers who don't want another veto have taken the "guns in parks" part out of the bill. Still though, the "guns in restaurants" part may still be enough for the governor to veto.

» Last night, LP Field was evacuated due to concerns that severe weather may be endangering the lives of CMA MusicFest goers. BUT. Nashville set a record. A record of rainfall in Nashville for June, 12, 2009. Pretty sweet.

» Karl Dean may have to wait a little bit until he can help reform Nashville schools. State law says that a Mayor cannot assume responsibility unless the law says so. Whew, for a second there we thought they might be doing something shady...

» GM executives essentially told Governor Phil Bredeson they would consider Spring Hill for the new car.... if Phil wrote a big enough check.

» A judge has ruled in favor of Habitat for Humanity's project against upset neighbors.

» And finally, there is reason to celebrate today. Recent studies show that the housing market in Tennessee is rebounding.

Music is dying. Music is dying, and we are killing it. How can we comfort ourselves, the murderer of all murderers? The death of music is a very slow one- a decades-long bloodletting of beauty.

We have bred an environment of "genres", "radio friendliness", "marketability", and complete corporate pillaging. Miley Cyrus, American Idol, and Panic! At The Disco are all mechanisms to make money and reinforce trends. Bands as you see them are simply licensing opportunities and brand representatives. Nothing in the mainstream sector is made for the sake of creation. We have abandoned the art and emotional power of music in favor of its profitability.

The other side of the coin is not any easier to stomach.

Most people say that Pizza is hard to come by. And when we're talking Pizza, we mean good, local, authentic, non-restaurant-chain Pizza. Well, Nashville has a little gem that you may not know about.

This place is located in the downtown Arcade. This place has retail, restaurants, candy shops, art galleries, office space, drug stores and a post office. If you have never been, you ought to take a day and go wander around the Arcade. It's a blast.

Manny's House of Pizza feels like a dive, well, because it is. The environment is exciting, a little sketchy too. The food is incredible and reasonably priced. Their pizza sauce is incredibly rich; better than Papa-Johns and Pizza Hut (yes, it's a bold statement).

Arguments aside, this place is great. It gives a different take on the vibe and culture of Nashville. Being in the heart of downtown, you are likely to see an assortment of people. Make sure you go with a friend or two to make it an enjoyable meal.

One of the great and awesome things about Nashville is that there is a eclectic mix of people here. At the Elmington Park in Nashville, there is a strong and unwavering community of ancient warriors who will fight each other with these padded weapons. It's safe and a good workout for these heroic giants (or dwarfs). Here's a link from the Nashville Scene back in 2000 explaining this community's love of ancient padded war. En-guard!

It's round two of overcastness in Nashville, which should make most of the Music Fest people downtown happy. Here's your roundup:

» Think of running a quick errand? Well make sure you have a 6 month probation time frame available if you do. A Franklin mother got half a year probation for leaving her sweet daughter in the car while she went into a crafting store. I'm thinking of a joke, I'm thinking of a joke....nope, it's funny enough as it is.

» Like your (good) mom said, "If you can't say anything nice, walk out of the room," or something like that. Metro Public Schools SEIU members did exactly that yesterday in a Metro budget meeting. Custodians and campus supervisors made a public protest by leaving the room. Now who's going to clean up Metro's budget mess?

» This is BAFFLING. How in the world can Nashville not be ready for the DTV switch? According to WPLN, Nashvillians are not ready and are a so-called "hotspot" for unpreparedness. Sounds like 20,000 homes will be watching static this Friday.

» Bank giant SunTrust is suing a local Waffle House CEO for using company money for his own personal use. Which causes us to ask, how many waffles can one buy with $3.7 million? Thank you Wolfram-Alpha, that's 1.233x10^6 waffles.

» Rolling Mill Hill condo's just got bought; by someone who has the money to build it. They were forced into receivership yesterday after their lending bank sued them. What's the moral of this story? Don't name a condo development Rolling Mill Hill.

» We know there is so much gloom-and-doom news about the economy right now, but here's a glimmer of HOPE. Donelson's Choice Foods of America is planning to hire 250 jobs over the next 18 months.

» If it makes sense for Metro and the state to cut their budgets in these difficult times, then the least thing you would expect if for them to buy a university. Whelp, you would be wrong. Good ol' Phil is planning to buy Lambuth in Jackson. Sigh...

» And finally, if that idea was brilliant enough, then this one will blow your socks off. If you were thinking about going for a nice weekend with your loved one or family, then I think a former-Prison-turned-bed-and-breakfast would be the PERFECT place. Unreal.

It always seems that Wednesday is overcast here in Nashville. That's fine with us. Anyone else exhausted already? If so, check out the roundup and see if any of this gets you awake:

» Nashville is about to get more beautiful (how can it get better?) Mayor Carl Dean has approved a $560.8 million dollar spending plan to make Nashville more beautiful. Improvements include new sidewalks, new crime lab, new library and new roads. Why not just make a mini-Nashville?

» For those of you looking for fun things to do for cheap, check out what Ms. Cheap has to say about it.

» A man who was beaten by 4 drug-hungry individuals in early March is suing Dillards? Apparently it's the retailer's fault for not providing security outside its doors. For some reason we thought it was the malls, but whatever.

» Councilman Michael Craddock is having a fit. He's upset because as a result of Metro's budget cuts, 400 or so vehicles are being cut. Man, maybe he'll have to pay for his own gas LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES.

» Good news for those of you who enjoy a Nutty Buddy or Ice Cream Sandwich on those hot summer days. Nashville's Purity Dairies is charging ahead through the recession, and doing a dang good job. They had a 2.6% growth from '07 to '08. Way to go Purity.

» Local developer Tony Giarratana is suing his partner for the renovation of Belle Meade Theater. According to him, they owe him over $2.25 million. Oh by the way, it's the reputable Gresham, Smith & Partners. Shame shame.

» Bison pitcher Rex Brother's was picked in the first round MLB draft yesterday by the Colorado Rockies. Way to go Rex!

» And finally, the Holiday Inn story we reported on a few days ago has jumped back into the picture. They have sold the property for $9 million and are going to keep it closed while it's being updated over the next 6 months.

Dave Green graduated from Lipscomb in 2006. After living abroad with his wife, he now resides in Washington DC as an editor.

Whats Up LU: Mr. Green, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. In what did you major? Did you continue your education elsewhere post-undergrad?
Dave Green: I was an English major and a German minor; I graduated in 2006. My overall college experience was very positive, largely due to my involvement with Lipscomb's English department. The English department (as I'm sure many other departments at Lipscomb are) served as both an academic and social community. I had personal relationships with my professors and enjoyed being around my classmates. It was one of my professors at Lipscomb who encouraged me to pursue an MFA in creative writing (for which I'm currently embroiled in thesis writing).

WULU: What did you do right out of college?
DG: A few months after graduating, my wife and I had the opportunity to live abroad on a Fulbright Scholarship (her doing, not mine). We spent nearly a year in Vienna, Austria. Emily taught English in a high school and took classes at the Uni Wien. I had the luxury of being a writer for those 10 months. I worked on my writing portfolio and graduate school applications. All that to say, I highly recommend seeking out and applying to scholarships/grants while in undergrad--you never know when it might pay off!

It's another good start to a fine Tuesday morning here in Nashville. The news isn't holding back either. Here's your roundup:

» Local businesses are not seeing any financial alleviation at all. Numbers have doubled since last year, of local businesses that have filed for bankruptcy.

» For those of you looking for a late mother's day gift, or a birthday gift for grandma, you may have one less J.Jill store to shop from. Parent company Talbot's has sold J.Jill to private investors to return some sort of profit after a $561 million loss. Ouch.

» TN's state revenue isn't balancing on the Abacus. The state was down $123.3 million than what they were expecting. It sounds like to us, we need a stimulus package! Oh wait....

» In certain areas of Greater Metropolitan Davidson County (Nashville), good food is vacant. These so-called "deserts" are trying to revive some good 'ol fashioned cookin'.

» Lipscomb Bison pitcher Rex Brother's may be drafted in the MLB!

» Former councilman Adam Dread (oh no), has found a loophole to keep guns out of restaurants. A pro-second amendment Republican, Dread says, "Guns and alcohol don't mix, period." Spoken truly from Mr. Dread-Head.

» Be careful who you work for! You may not get paid for 120 days. That's the fate over a dozen local vendors found themselves in when they were expecting payment from Nashville West Owners.

» "Don't tase me bro!" We couldn't resist, but Metro police officers didn't have any other choice this week to catch a high-speed car suspect on the run.

» And finally, even though this isn't Nashville news, we figured we should give you something to laugh about since there's so much not-good-news in Nashville today. Enjoy enjoy enjoy. PS: nice one Doogie.
goode.jpg
Dr. Goode is a Professor of History here at Lipscomb University. He is also the coordinator of the LIFE (Lipscomb Initiative for Education) program at the Tennessee Prison for Women.

What's Up LU: Dr. Goode, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. Where did you go and in what did you major?
Richard Goode: Growing up in Canton, Ohio, I used to go to the church library and look at all the catalogues for the various Christian colleges and universities.  Even then I knew I'd attend Lipscomb.  When it came to a major I was much less certain.  Early on I considered pre-Dental, but never took the first course in that curriculum.  Then for a moment I thought about business.  For a day or two I explored political science. Ultimately I selected Religious Education (Bible).  In unexpected ways, it turned out a good choice.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?
RG: Well, just about the time I graduated my wife, Candyee, and I married. (No.  Contrary to rumors, "meeting your future mate" is not a graduation requirement.)  Candyee had another year in college, so I worked odd jobs and explored graduate work at Vanderbilt.

Local opportunities for serving could include some of the following:

>> Help the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere clean up Mill Creek! The event has been rescheduled for this weekend. More information.

Lindsey Krinks is a graduate of Lipscomb University who works at Park Center's Homeless Outreach Program. She is married to Andrew Krinks.

Since last summer, members of Amos House have come to know and love the colorful, endearing residents of Tent City, a local homeless encampment here in Nashville. When the city planned to close the camp on November 1st of last year, we organized a letter writing campaign and non-violent demonstration to pressure city officials and draw attention to the injustice of bull-dozing the makeshift homes of our brothers and sisters. With the combined efforts of college students, advocates, local church goers, and other concerned citizens, a public outcry was launched and to our surprise, Mayor Karl Dean was sympathetic to our concerns and granted the doomed camp a reprieve. He charged the Homelessness Commission with deciding what to do about the camp and, in turn, the Commission charged local outreach workers with the task of moving Tent City's residents out of the camp and into housing. The lack of low-income housing in Nashville and the overwhelming barriers that people living on the streets face made this task challenging, to say the least.

Good morning, LU. TGIF, and thank goodness we have another cool day to look forward to. What's the news? Let's see...

>> Apparently the rain has brought some things to light... Like, 6,000 year old things.

>> If you're hungry for some fresh fish, you're in luck. This Saturday everyone is allowed to fish without a permit. And with the beautiful weather, you should probably take advantage of this.

>> With the government buying more and more of GM to keep them from going under, they now own 60% of the company. But don't worry, Obama says they're taking the "hands-off" approach.

>> Icon and Velocity developer Bristol Development, LLC. is taking housing contracts seriously - suing several buyers who never closed on their condos.

>> The battle continues. Guns in bars? Yes. Guns in bars? No. Guns in bars? Yes. So what do we do about it? Attorney Adam Dread wants to use a loophole to again say NO.

>> Apparently due to a string of violence in churches, Metro police are meeting with churches to give education on how to stay safe. ...Thanks, guys.

>> FREE SNOWPATROL CONCERT! At Grimey's. Really. We aren't kidding.

>> Yes, if you thought you saw us on the NY Times blog, you were right! Thank you, Ale Garcia, for the publicity!

Jake Burton is a senior at Lipscomb University studying bible. His hobbies include long-boarding, ultimate frisbee and eating at Chick-Fil-A.

Its 5:48AM June 1st. In about an hour I am heading to the Atlanta airport to catch a plane to Jamaica. Many of you may know the story of why I am heading to the island and many of you probably do not. For those who don't, I will bring you up to speed...
This past spring semester, I planned to go on a spring break mission trip to Panama City Beach and reach out to the college scene with a team from Lipscomb. The trip required much prep work and investment, and a week into the process, I realized that I had overcommitted myself. I was involved with too many activities, ministries, and school responsibilities that something had to be let go. I didn't want to drop the trip, but inside myself I knew it was the only option to avoid burnout.
What could be better than going to see an exhibition at an art museum in a beautiful city in the heart of its downtown? Having a nice and delicious lunch post-seeing an exhibition at an art museum in a beautiful city in the heart of its downtown.

The Cafe at The Frist Center for The Visual Arts off Broadway is a great, affordably-priced joint that is convenient for museum goers or even those who aren't looking to see art but need a place to eat.

We never knew that roadways, especially spaghetti-road-changes could look so serene and soothing. This extended exposure has a lot to do with that, as well as the composition. If only Google Street View was this nice...

Overcast and cool, fellow Nashvillians, we hope you're taking advantage of this much needed break from the heat. Here's the roundup: » You may have to start tipping twice at your local starbucks. Now barista's don't have to share their tips with their shift supervisors. Our only question is, can they figure out how to NOT burn their coffee? » The house overturned Governor Phil Bredesen's veto on the Gun's In Bars Bill. We see only two good things coming from this bill: better service, and old saloon-esque gun fights.

» Men's Journal is giving props to The Gulch. Check out why.

» You may want to reinforce your security system in your home if you live in Knoxville. "Burglars?" you ask? No. Bears.

» May Town Center may have the support and data it needs to get the Metro Planning Commission to allow them to develop. Any corporations want to bid on the land?

» Another Chapter 11 filing has been made by Nukote. Maybe we need to make this another daily feature? We sure hope not.

» Don't worry: Shakespeare In The Park is happening this year. However, 2010 may not be so lucky. Organizers are having trouble finding funding for the summer program for next year.

» Nashville Photographer is planning on... rowing to Mexico. Props given.

» And finally, Nashville was ranked 5 out of 366 for areas of economic strength. Love that.

There most definitely is something about this building. It holds Athena Parthenos (who now is gilded gold like she used to be) and on the lower level holds an art gallery featuring many prominent 19th & 20th century American artists.

Nashvillians and fellow-friends: we have made it to Wednesday. Which means that Friday and the weekend to follow is that much closer. Don't, however, get too excited yet: there's plenty of news to share today: » Sadly today, one of Nashville's greatest restaraunt's might be closing its doors for the last time. Germantown's Monell's, filed for Chapter 11 yesterday. » Watch your back. Literally. Yesterday at The Mall of Green Hills, an 18 year old teenager was waiting on AAA to help him with his car when he was shoved in his trunk, later to be robbed. Maybe Forbes was right? » Locally Nashville based Dollar General Stores (who have a new logo by the way) showed reports of substantial financial gains for the first quarter!

» Country music stars John Rich and Jared Ashley just can't get along. They are saying some things that their mother's certainly didn't teach them. It doesn't matter who is right really at this point: both of them look like goofballs now.

» Seriously, who throws a rock? There were two rocks thrown over an I-65 interstate at vehicles, some which received substantial damage. Maybe John and Jared still fighting?

» Dickson has just unveiled a new Museum honoring Former Tennessee Governor Frank Clement. The Museum is located in the Hotel Holbrook...the same place Clement was born. Pretty cool.

» The new Nashville Convention Center is closer to happening. Metro voted in favor of land acquisition yesterday.

» And finally, CMA Music Fest is right on our toes. You can check out what you need to know here.

Jocelyn Bailey graduated Lipscomb in 2005 with a degree in English. After pursuing a masters degree at Boston College, she now works at Thomas Nelson here in Nashville, Tennessee.

Whats Up LU: Ms. Bailey, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. In what did you major? Did you continue your education elsewhere post-undergrad?
Jocelyn Bailey: I had about fourteen majors at Lipscomb, and I liked them all. But after a couple of years as a pre-med student, I realized that I wasn't particularly good at science. I eventually chose English because I I've always been a reader, and I loved the LU English department. I admit--I kind of liked the idea of not knowing exactly what my future would look like! I applied to graduate school my senior year, and got in for the next fall.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?
JB: I went to Boston College to get my masters degree right after college. I spent the summer after graduating at home, freaking out about whether or not I was going to survive a Boston winter. Thankfully, I did. :) I spent two years at BC in school, working as a writing tutor and interning at a local publishing company.

A big part of college is learning to be on your own, and a big part of learning to be on your own is learning how to handle your money.  Today, WULU introduces a series on personal finance writtern by Joe Dunlap, an '06 Lipscomb alum who now works as a financial analyst.  Without further ado, here's Joe:

joe.jpgI begin my introductory financial musing to discuss two truths I find self-evident:

1. The easiest task in this world is paying someone else money
2. YOU are the only person fighting for your dollar.

Let's start by examining numero uno (that's Spanish for one numero). You've heard:
• Grocery store clerk asking you "Cash, check, debit, or credit?"

• "0% financing on all xxxx's from now until 20xx"
• "No payments for 90 days"
• "Now pay online!"
• "Automatic deductions from your checking account"
• "Bill me later"
• Taxes deducted from your paycheck
• Coupon books for installment loan payments (car, student loan, etc.)
• "3 easy payments of $39.95 (No COD's please), but wait! Call now and receive an extra..."

There are copious types of mediums, terms, and instructions to collect your money as easily as possible. Don't have money now? "Pay later." Don't have cash with you? "We take checks or cc and there's an in-store ATM." How do you pay your car note? "Pay online, call our 24 hr hotline, or mail a check in this pre-printed addressed envelope." Corporations and governments are innovative in their techniques for collecting as much cash from you as possible. They'll get your money. They use technology, (in)convenience, and even guilt/pride to drain your wallet like teenage daughters. You'll notice these tactics in any sales environment. Buying a house, furniture, car, etc.

Taking Notes

By: Lauren Plummer-Joseph

The murmer of the pine's green branches in her ears, she remembers how the

white heron came flying through the golden air and how they watched the sea

and the morning together, and Sylvia cannot speak; she cannot tell the heron's

secret and give its life away.  -- Sarah Orne Jewett

Take me to the house you grew up in

and bring the daughter you birthed.

If it's the kind of summer evening

that holds a heavy magic in its balmy breath,

let's take to the trees--see how high we can climb--

and find a praying mantis to befriend.

I'll wait for the milk white moon to

peak a pie sliver through the Ozark hills--

when she shines her light upon the eaves and hollows

of a face I have so long admired--

Woman, Mother, Sister, Friend

I will look at you and remember a language long forgotten

from a world I want to know again.

There's something about an old rustic looking building capped off with blue skies that seems universally nostalgic and urban. This picture captures a big part of the heart of Nashville.

Day two of beautiful weather here in Nashville. Seriously, not a cloud in the sky! Actually, last evening, members of the WuLU staff were playing some frisbee golf on Lipscomb's campus and ran into this guy. Question: Why did he not take off his coat and play with, and do you think one secret service guard really is enough for the governor of Tennessee? You Decide. Here's the roundup: » The streets of Nashville are a little safer as Metro Police arrested 43 DUI perp's.

» At least it's not first today... Mayor Carl Dean says "Maytown center? Uhhh, Ahhhh, I don't want to take a stance because I don't want either side mad at me!" Or something like that. But if you were wondering, a new study shows that Maytown will help Metro's tax revenue. DUHHH.

» Our own D.LO inspires the community.

» Your doctor's visit may have just gotten a little bit easier. Read why.

» Lamar Alexander...Come on. He says, "I don't see why we can't build?!" Lamar, maybe because GM filed bankruptcy yesterday?

» The Metro Action Commission will be helping needy children this summer. Way to go Metro!

» If you're looking for free, good entertainment, check out what the Nashville Symphony has to offer this summer.

» For those of you who care, Mt. Juliet natives Kings of Leon added an overpriced concert date to the Sommet Center. Yay. Other artists dates for Nashville added too.

» There truly are no words to describe this story. Well, we'll try. Nothing like a father and son bonding experience by stealing from a dead man. "Oh don't worry son, if we do get caught it'll only cost us $500, and by then, we won't get sued...he's dead!"

Dr. Jerome Reed is a professor of music at Lipscomb University and teaches private piano and composition lessons. He is married and has one daughter.

What's Up LU: Dr. Reed, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. Where did you go and in what did you major?

Jerome Reed: I went to Middle Tennessee State University as an undergraduate.  They offered me a financial package I couldn't turn down.  (In fact, I got a check from them every month which I saved and bought a car when I graduated).  I majored in piano performance and ended up getting a second major in French.  It was that second major that is part of the story of how I met my wife.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?

JR: I went straight into graduate school.  I knew from the beginning that I did not want to stop until I had finished a DMA in piano performance.  I went to The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and studied with a fabulous Hungarian teacher, Bela Boszormenyi-Nagy.

If you're looking for an opportunity to serve in the Nashville area, check out the Second Harvest Food Bank. They're looking for help sorting food all summer. Grab a couple of friends and head down to the bank!

It's a beautiful 70° here in Nashville today, without a cloud in the sky. It's also the first day of June. You know what they say about June... Here's the roundup: » If you thought you had a few weeks to get past the May Town Center debate, think again. Some wanna-be Dear Abby writer at The City Paper is shooting spitwad's this morning. Really? » Earlier this morning, Spring Hill GM plant employees were waiting for their fate. Now it seems they have their answer. Change we can believe in? » Steeplechase may look a little bit different next year. The Horsemen of The Iroquis and Vanderbilt's Friends of Children's Hospital just can't get along. Come on guys and gals, can't we all get along?

» AIM sold out. Literally.

» Chief of Metro Police is freaking out a little bit, and for good reason. I would like to see him play softball though...

» The convention center may never see the light of day, according to an expert on convention centers? Granted, this is his opinion...and it's wrong.

» Finally, a new study shows that parents are saving more for their student's college. Let's thank them with a short video clip.
