Restaurant Review: 417

Downtown has so much to offer. Especially fine cuisine. Sure there are your typical Panera's, Wendy's, Burger King's, McDonald's, and other chain places. But the mark of a fine city's cuisine, are those spots that don't offer you a combo packaged deal and possess an immense amount of personality and heritage.

417 offers just that.

Good morning Nashville! There's plenty of news to follow, so here it is: » Yesterday marked yet another Metro Planning Commission meeting with supporters and opponents of the May Town Center development for Bell's Bend. You can read about the meeting here, and here, and here, and finally here.

» The Country Music Hall of Fame is starting a free concert series starting June 11-14. This series will feature such acts as Dierks Bentley, Montgomery Gentry, Darryl Worley, John Michael Montgomery, and Dolly Parton.

» Whew! You don't have to worry, Governor Phil Bredeson vetoed the bill that would allow people to carry handguns into establishments that serve alcohol. What does this mean for you? Nothing really, only that you can feel a little safer at your local O'Charley's.

» Local establishment Easter Seals will be closing its doors soon. They are going through bankruptcy and are down donations as well. The rehabilitation center has told its members to look for other options elsewhere.

» Texting, texting, texting. A recent study has shown that teens are texting an average of 80 texts per day. Thanks to Wolfram-Alpha, thats a little under 30,000 texts per year. Nashville is fortunate to have a recent law passed that makes it illegal to text while driving. You won't BRB.

» And finally, if you were planning on checking out a book from the library or enjoying a picnic at the park, STOP. Due to budget cuts, Metro has cut back on library and park hours. You can always play around on Wolfram-Alpha...

Jesse Baker is a Senior at Lipscomb University majoring in Bible. You can follow Jesse on his Blog.

I've had a sticker on my Nalgene bottle for about a year now (because you're not cool unless you have a Nalgene bottle covered with stickers... for more of my lessons on "how to be cool," please reference another blog here.) that is a green circle with the words "God is Green" on it, and around the edges of the circle you can see the silhouettes of animals, etc. I received this sticker as a gift from someone who had visited Mars Hill Bible Church in Michigan (Rob Bell's home church), as that congregation had done a series of study under the same name. I've gotten plenty of questions and cheesy remarks about the odd claim the sticker makes, but the point is, of course, that I believe God cares about environmentalism. More appropriately, I believe God cares about that which he has created.

However, although I have supported the idea of a Christian responsibility to the environment, I had not thoroughly researched the topic until just recently. For my maymester class, systematic biblical doctrine, I was required to research and write a paper on a topic of biblical teaching. For this assignment I chose to explore the Christian ethic of environmentalism. So, if you would like to read my paper, here it is in all it's glory... just take a deep breath, because it's a long one and certainly not as interesting (I wouldn't think) or brief (in comparison) as my usual posts. But I had a few friends who wanted to read it so this is mostly for their easy access. Enjoy.

Lipscomb Security & Safety was reacting to another call while this Frontside 50-50 grind was happening. This picture was taken on the steps of Beaman Library. B Marshall's caption for this photo reads; "No land yet -- Ill take this off when he rolls away in the near future." Dear Lipscomb Security & Safety, BE READY!

We've got some news items to share, so let's get to it!: » G.L. Landiss was honored yesterday for being Lipscomb's oldest living graduate. He graduated the same year all this stuff happened.

» University of Memphis has some explaining to do. Apparently, the NCAA says they are under investigation of a player cheating on his SAT and another player' friend accepting free travel money.

» Bells Bend may be closer to passing at Councilman Lonnell Matthews Jr. publicly offered his support of the project. It seems as if this thing could really help our city. Check it out.

» Our favorite home-cookin' restaurant chain is looking miiiiighty fine. Numbers are up, which means, the biscuits will keep comin'.

» Greenpeace is coughing in Tennessee. Yup, that's right: our emissions are bad. We are 23rd out of the domestic 48. Not bad? Cough, cough...

» And finally, Tennessee and other states may be pulling one of America's favorite energy drinks from the shelves. German authorities have asked 6 German states to pull the drink from the shelves. Why? Because they apparently have Cocaine in them. Makes so much sense.

Dude. Whoa. Whaaat? Excellent! Bogus. Gnarly. All these incredibly intelligent words are staples in the 1989 cult-classic, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. This movie features America's favorite actor. Yep, you guessed it: Dennis Quaid. Ha! Just kidding, but he really is bad. Nope, we're talking about Keanu Reeves. Not only that, but Lost Boys vampire Alex Winter's stand alongside Reeves in truly on of the funniest and quirky movies of the late 80s.

Happy Wednesday to everyone! Let's see what's new in Nashville today:

» Check out human versions of Wolfram-Alpha! Well, not really, but they are the Valedictorian's and Salutatorian's from Nashville area schools.

» Oak Hill is at it again, taking power into their own hands. Names of several Nashville leaders have been dropped due to ethics concerns.

» Мы имеем 1.96 процента Facebook! That's Russian for "We own 1.96% of facebook" which is exactly what a Russian technology company said yesterday. Милый! (Awesome!)

» It seems that more jobs will be lost if Governor Phil Bredeson cuts the budget. Over 700 jobs will be cut which will save the state overall about 30 Million dollars. That could buy Nashville 5 Six Million Dollar Men. Just a thought...

» Tired of "Restricted" or "Unavailable" phone calls to your cell phones? Yeah, so are about 100 complaints filed with The Tennessee Regulatory Authority. That's $2,000 bucks per fine. Ouch.

Jerry Gaw: I attended Lipscomb for my undergraduate degree in History Education and then did a Masters in history at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana and a Ph.D. at Mississippi State University in Starkville.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?

JG: I taught grades 7-11 for three years, was in full-time ministry for three and a half years, and got married to a beautiful woman who gave me a sweet baby boy.

WULU: What were some of the best experiences you had in college?

JG: Meeting good friends, some of whom I've stayed in touch with for the thirty-five years since, and getting a first rate education that prepared me well for graduate school and life.

I'm not gonna lie: this is pretty funny. The building tenants and development company are probably perturbed about this little stunt. The rest of the Nashville community however is getting a laugh in the middle of their day.
Winners: Everyone. Seriously, who take's themselves too seriously to laugh at this? Well, I guess one person which brings us to...
Losers: This guy. I do feel bad for him, I really do. But then I don't simultaneously.
Look for this little gem off Third Avenue while supplies/time lasts.

Happy Tuesday! Since Memorial Day was yesterday, this 4-day work week has already gotten off to a good start. What's happening in Nashville? See below: » The fate of a new Nashville condominium development will turn out like Mike Teevee from Willy Wonka.

» Leave it to the government to thwart small business. Now, the fuzz maybe the only ones to boot your car. I never thought I'd say this, but, I'm, .. outraged?

» No indian giving here. J.Alexander's has bought back 12% of its stock. Who cares? Their Steak Brazzo is still going to be amazing.

» McGavock Students try and pull a quick one past their school Principal. Turns out the joke is on them. Most have to re-take final exams. Prank-fail.

» And finally; F I N A L L Y. This one hits close to home. Nashville mayor Karl Dean is slated to make an announcement today at 1:00pm about Hillsboro Road improvements. If only he could figure out a way to get this guy involved somehow...

Downtown Nashville is a pretty awesome place. I was walking down broadway mid-afternoon, passing by aspiring country music artists, tourists and the native Nashvillian workforce, when I was approached by this guy: Seamas Navarro. This guy is from San Fernando, CA, and is a beat poet. He recited me an incredible poem, so I asked if I could take his picture. Thus, the picture of the day.

*POTD Extra!*

When you're taking pictures of people, especially street-side musicians, don't take their picture and move on. You might want to drop a few bucks in their case so they don't yell at you about making a living and stuff. Awkward.

Some say "keep it simple stupid." Thus, in their honor, I say, TGIF!!! This is what's going on in the world today:

» India.Arie, Counting Crows, Augustana, Neko Case and others will be playing in Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium this summer. Get your tickets now!

» Any of you feeling a little beach-esque music? If so, then the ukulele is your instrument. You can win tickets to see Jake Shimabukuro play at the Belcourt Theater on May 27th through The Nashville Scene.

» 32GB iPhone?! MacRumors posted that T-Mobile Austria began marketing a 32GB iPhone and simultaneously saying the 16GB iPhone is nearing it's end. Is this the new iPhone?

» Nashville might be closer to finalizing plans on the new convention center. If this comes to fruition, the bill could be well over $635 million dollars. Check please?!

» For those of you who know what Skynet is without having to google it, then you may want to read reviews of the Terminator: Salvation before you go see it. Also here. And here.

» If you've lost faith in Metro's Public Schooling system, don't lose heart. All MNPS employees must reapply for their jobs starting this summer.

» Nashville sculpture artist Alan LeQuire has an exhibition at the Nashville Public Library. Don't know his work? Yes you do. Athena, Musica, and Jack?

» 9.9%. Does that number mean anything? According to the Nashville Business Journal, that's the unemployment rate for the state of Tennessee.
About Us--Janis.JPG
Janis Adcock is the Administrative Assistant in the Department of Missions at Lipscomb University. She organizes and oversees all of the mission trip logistics before students are sent out on their trips.

What's Up LU: Mrs. Adcock, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. Where did you go and in what did you major?

Janis Adcock: I attended Lipscomb for my freshman year intending to enter U.T. school of nursing in Memphis after  that year.  Although I was accepted into the U.T. nursing program, I changed my mind and wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.  I left school and went to work for an insurance company in Nashville.  I worked for a year and decided to try college again, met my husband here at Lipscomb, we married and instead of receiving a B.A. or B.S. I received a P.H.T. degree (putting hubby through).  Twenty years later I went back to school at a community college and earned an Associates Degree in Business and Management.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?

JA: Married.

Hello Mr. Horse I heard you are a cop. When you aren't hanging out at the Ellington Agricultural Center located in south Nashville you work the big events like Tennessee Titans games. Have you ever met anybody famous? I bet you don't care. The Ellington Agricultural Center is a cool place to hang out, and it even has some trails to walk. Just remember don't feed the horses.
Good morning, LU! It's finally Thursday. We're over the hump and heading towards Memorial Day - and we couldn't be happier. What's happening in Nashville on this lovely Thursday? Let's see...

  • If you promise to give your free cocktails to someone else, the Memorial Marina Kickoff could be a nice way to spend the evening.

  • Pending legislation, police may start fingerprinting for any minor offense. We aren't sure how we feel about this...

  • The Tennessee Dept. of Transportation has decided to create a Twitter account to help give traffic updates for Memorial Day. ...Thanks, guys!

  • Edgehill Studios Cafe is hosting Urban Acoustic League at 7pm tonight. What is it? "A little acoustic, folk, and indie all rolled into one." - musiccityunsigned.com

On a day as beautiful as today, if anywhere in Nashville you should be at Radnor Lake. It was packed today with strollers, hikers, people journaling and young photographers winding down the secret-garden-like paths to enjoy the scent and beauty of summertime or just admire the scenery on a bench by the lake. Whether you're looking for a way to relax and put the day behind you, or a vigorous walk to energize and refresh you - you can find it at Radnor any day of the week... and today couldn't have been more perfect.

Mike Fernandez is the Director of Theater at Lipscomb University. He has directed two Theater productions and is also a current Professor of Theater.

What's Up LU: Mr. Fernandez, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. Where did you go and in what did you major?

Mike Fernandez: I went to ACU and got a BA in Theatre in 1999.  While there I focused on any and every aspect of theatre that I could.  I acted, directed, built and designed.  After ACU I later went on to get an MFA in Playwriting from The University of Houston in 2004.  While there I was able to learn under Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright Edward Albee.  It was quite an experience to learn under one of the best playwrights of the 20th Century.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?

MF: From ACU I went right into teaching at a private Christian high school in Houston, called Northland Christian.  I taught theatre there for five years.  The last three I was also completing my MFA.  It was quite challenging because I had to build a program up from nothing, however, it was also quite rewarding seeing the students achieve so much.

Good morning, LU! It's hump day and we're so glad it is. A lot has happened and is happening in the world and we're here to share it all with you.

  • Bad news for strawberry lovers: this year's crop has almost been entirely ruined by rain! Looks like our imports might be going up.

  • Need something fun to do after work tonight? The Danny Barnes Trio is playing tonight at Station Inn.

  • The bill that would require people who have received a DUI to have a special distinction on their license plate was voted down yesterday.

  • FREE LATTES tonight from 6:15-7pm at CREMA (Nashville's no-nonsense coffee and espresso bar). Apparently in order to practice "latte art" for a competition tomorrow, they're making free ones tonight!

"Take, me out to the ball game, take, me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cra-cker jacks, I don't care if I ever get back!"

Well, I'm sure most of you would like to go back, and I'm also sure most of you are craving either nachos, peanuts, cracker jacks, ice cream or a hotdog.

You're in luck. If you're in Nashville, close to Vanderbilt, Hillsboro Village and the Historic Belcourt Theater, then don't fret: a hotdog is as close as the 7th inning stretch.

prill,-val-web.jpg

Val Prill is the current Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Lipscomb University. She teaches French, and is married to Dr. Paul Prill, Professor of Communication.

WULU: Dr. Prill, tell me a little bit about your own college experience. Where did you go and in what did you major?

Val Prill: My college experience stretches over a long period of time. I've been a traditional student and a non-traditional student. I started out at 17 at Western Illinois University as a Music Teaching Major. I planned to be a high school choral director. After a while I switched to a theatre major with a music minor. Then I got married and dropped out of school to work at a bank while my husband finished his BA and MA at WIU. I didn't finish my BA until he came to Lipscomb to teach. At 30, I was sitting in undergraduate classes again. This time I majored in French, with music minor.

WULU: What did you do right out of college?

VP: When I dropped out of Western Illinois, I went to work as a bookkeeper in a local bank. It was a great reminder of why I wanted to finish my BA eventually. Immediately after completing my BA in French, I went to a combined MA/PhD program in French Literature at Vanderbilt. When I completed that program, I returned to LU to teach.

WULU: Wow. That sounds like a journey! What were some of the best experiences you had in college?

VP: Spending time with other students. As a traditional undergrad, I really enjoyed participating in performances: plays; concerts & recitals; and opera workshop performances.

WULU: Alumni and current college student's know how tough college can be at times. What were some of the hardest/greatest lessons you have learned thus far in life?

VP: The hardest and greatest lesson I've learned is to trust in God to take care of my needs, even when I really want something to happen in a specific way. The thing is, I have to relearn this lesson over and over, because it is a hard thing to let go of my own wants.

WULU: In your own words, explain the feelings you get when you watch a student's progression from their Freshman year to their Senior year. It must be amazing.

The Wheatfield with Crows

by: Luke Brooks

Between a haunted blue sky and tall golden wheat

crows flock to a field

where the soil swallowed the blood of a man

whose life's work led him to his end

-the sadness will last forever.

The black birds' oil soaked in through his eyes;

their flapping darkened his mind.

Three paths lay ahead, but he'd walked them before,

and there was no where left to go

-the sadness will last forever.

Lead tore flesh but missed his sobbing heart,

and took it's time to dry his tears.

Hours turned to days, and the crows never left

until death's dove calmed the stormy sky

-the sadness will last forever.

The abstract dissolves the concrete;

reason is undulant and cruel.

Paint blurs what's real and what's make-believe,

and pastel replaces the past

-the sadness will last forever.

Some never get to see this view of the Allen Bell Tower on our campus. Right below this shot is the entrance to the bell tower. Most of the time it's locked, but if fate is in your favor, you may find it open. Legend has it that on the other side is Narnia, the Secret Garden, or the Egyptian-like land from the 1994 movie Stargate. Would you be upset if I told you that it's a staircase that leads to really, really, really loud bells?
Good morning, LU! Tuesdays aren't the busiest days in Nashville, but there's always a lot going on here.

  • Yesterday Tennessee students held a Slip N Slide in petition of furthering sustainable practices at universities through supporting an American Clean Energy and Security Act. The catch? It was infront of Rep. Bart Gordon's office. Messy.

  • The Predators announced that beginning TODAY they are taking sign-ups for a free learn-to-play program. Hurry!

  • With summer travel increasing, experts say gas will near $3/gallon, but should not exceed that. ...Is that supposed to be a good thing, or a bad thing...?

  • Lipscomb's own Mike Smith is back in Tennessee! As his bike journey continues north, you can follow his progress on his blog or his Twitter.

  • Watch out! A man convicted of brutally beating a man in the Green Hills Mall parking lot escaped yesterday and is on the loose somewhere in Tennessee!

  • They've put them in bars and now they're putting them in parks, too. Don't forget your pistol when you take your next picnic, because it's official: guns are now allowed in parks.

  • Need a refreshing night of art? Mike Hoolboom's Imitations of Life is free at the Frist for college students from 5-9pm on Thursdays and Fridays, but only until June 7th!
Austin Church talks about how messy relationships always serve as great stories.
Ryan Daly hashes out what's up in sports.
Seth King contemplates his summer plans.
Good morning, LU! The start of another week and the start of another Monday (our favorite... right). But a lot happened over the weekend, and a lot is happening today, check it out.

  • Unfortunately two of the previous seventeen elephants at the sanctuary passed away this weekend! Memorial and funeral services will be posted shortly.

  • Need to get rid of that ticket you got recently? Well lucky for you they've found several cases of ticket fixing among Davidson county police officers! It's about time they let a couple slide... but unfortunately they're working on finding the cops who did it. Bummer, right?

  • Cheap date: Thanks to WSMV for the summer you can find 50% off deals every week on Nashville events and restaurants. But be quick - supplies are limited!

  • For all you Civil War nuts, Lipscomb's Lifelong Learning May Seminar is based around just that this year! Starting today, classes are going on all week surveying the Civil War. Icing on the cake? A trip to a Murfreesboro battlefield and fortress.

Good morning, LU! What's better in Nashville than country music, right? Along with our usual odds and ends, here's a little bit of country music gossip to keep things interesting. Enjoy!

  • Recently got a Twitter, or just looking for new people to follow on Twitter? Paste Magazine suggests ten of the funniest comedians to follow on Twitter.

  • Hope no one was caught at the Office Depot in Murfreesboro yesterday.. If so, you may have seen the 50,000 honey bees that they were trying to get rid of!

  • Craigslist is the college student's best friend... sometimes.

  • And for some country music gossip... How about Dolly Parton possibly paying for Jessica Simpson's next album? What a lady!

mosaic.JPG

It's been a beautiful few days here in Nashville.  In honor of the nice weather, we'll leave you today with our picture of the day, a spring mosaic...anyone know where in town you can find it?

Good morning, LU. Another sunny summer day without classes, and some very interesting news...

  • Mom and Dad can breathe a little! Money saved on electricity is going up, as the electricity meters are going smart!

  • PBS is giving insight into the world of songwriters in Nashville in their new series, "Legends and Lyrics."

  • Love your jeans low? Lucky for you the bill that would incur fines for sagging pants was not passed, due to high cost of the implementation. Forget rights... apparently too many people would have to be fined and the city "just can't afford it."

  • "I'm parched, FruiTea me!" - Utter these.. somewhat awkward.. words in any Nashville Arby's today and you'll receive a free fruit tea! ...Worth it!

  • Guess what... you can't carry your gun on campus but you CAN take it into a bar now! (Where you go to minister... of course.) The bill just passed with a whopping 66-23 vote count in the Tennessee House.

Frist.JPG

You know that crazed feeling you get when you have been hanging around campus too long, and you just feel like you have to get out and do something in the city? Well, I had that same feeling last Tuesday. My roommate and I decided to go to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Downtown Nashville to remedy our mid-week blues. I've lived in Nashville most of my life, but I had never been to an exhibit at The Frist until the other day. Well, now I know what I have been missing. You may be the type of person who scoffs at the idea of spending your afternoon wandering through a museum. I used to be that person, so trust me, I understand. However, a visit to the Frist is totally worth it. Not only is the building beautiful, but it also houses some incredible artwork throughout its yearly schedule. After grabbing a bite at the Frist Café, a perfect little for a great soup, salad, or sandwich, we headed into the main building.

The entrance leading to the main lobby always displays a current exhibit, normally featuring local work. When I was there, there was a selection of photographs depicting life for children in the Safe Haven program.

Good morning, LU.  Get out your tacky sombreros and fry up your signature Kraft cheese quesadillas, today is Cinco de Mayo

Here what's on your minds:

Good morning, LU.  It's still raining, but find some comfort in knowing that exams will be over soon and you'll be free to nap until the sun comes out again.

mexican.jpgWhen you get a craving for some cheap and delicious Mexican cuisine, your first inclination is probably to head on over to Mazatlan or maybe Jim's Nachos. When WULU started hankering for some fajitas this weekend, we decided to be a little adventurous and went to Las Cazulelas instead. Las Cazulelas is a relatively new Mexican restaurant at the corner of Nolensville road and Harding Place. Tucked away in a non-descript strip mall, you've probably driven past this fine little establishment many times without giving it a second thought.

opera.jpgGood morning, LU.  If you're planning to survive the swine flu you'd better act fast to get your surgical mask (supplies are quickly disappearing!).  In your rush to get to the nearest mask outlet make sure you don't text and drive because its about to become illegal in Tennessee.  If you don't make it in time, the fat lady will be singing at the Nashville Opera's brand new and beautiful building.  A nice touch of class for our city to be sure, not that we needed any help being classy since we already have the distinction of being home to the country's best bathroom

In other news, Stan Abrams, M.D., recommends a treatment for WULU's spider-bitten friend, and the Baseball Battle of the Boulevard begins tonight with free food at 6 at Dugan Field.
